Steerable Lift Axle Kits General Knowledge & Identifying
Let’s start at the beginning: • There are two types of Axles: • Straight Lift Axle: Raises and Lowers • Steerable Lift Axle: Raises and Lowers & Steers • Lift Axle: • We only offer one kit. It is for a 5” round axle. • Works only for single tire applications. • Part Number: B-SHORTLIFTAX • (For dual tire applications, stationary mount fenders to frame
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Steerable Lift Axle Kits: (General Info/Terms) • Minimizer offers several fender bracket kits (16) designed to attach to the spindle (brake assembly) on various makes and models of steerable axles. • Only works with single tire steerable lift axles • We have kits available for 8k, 13k, and 20k axles • We need to know both the axle and brake brand. There can also be differencesif it was installed at the OEM or if it’s an aftermarket model. • IMPORTANT: While there are situations where we may be able to tell them whatkit is needed by finding out the axle model number and brake mfg,it is ALWAYS best to ask the proper questions and/or get pictures of the configuration. There are too many configurations out there to just guess. • Lift axle kits is one of our most common RMA’s because not enough info was gathered and we just guessed or assumed. Be sure to get ALL information!!
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Steerable Lift Axle Kits: (Axle & Brake Mfgs) • List of popular Axle Manufactures • Watson & Chalin • Hendrickson • Link • Ridewell • List of popular Brake Manufactures • Eaton • Meritor • How to identify what kit is needed: • Brake Cam Type & Position • Two Bolt Cam • Four Bolt Cam • Weld-on Cam • Hub Bolt Configuration • Two Bolt • Four Bolt
Now for the difficult stuff (cont): • Brake Cam Identification • Determine Cam position by looking at the drivers side axle from theoutside of the truck (basically looking thru the tire/hub) • Cam positioning is like a clock • Fwd positions (9:00, 10:00, 11:00) • Aft positions (1:00, 2:00, 3:00) • Tip: If you look at the axle from the outside on the drivers side, it’sthe same as looking from the inside on the passenger side.
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: Brake Cam:
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: Two Bolt Cam: Cam Flange Cam Two Bolt Cam Flange Cam Tube
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: Four Bolt Cam: Four Bolt Cam Flange
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: Weld-on Cam: Weld-on Cam Flange
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Two Bolt Cam Installation: • When there is a two bolt cam flange application, You mountboth front and back brackets to the hub bolts. Nothing mounts to the cam flange. • You do still need to know the clock position of the cam, so the bracket arm on that side goes around the cam tube properly.
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Four Bolt Cam Installation: • When there is a four bolt cam flange application, you mount the cam side bracket to the cam flange. You use 3 out of the four bolts. You mount the opposite side bracket to the hub bolts. • You need to know the measurement/spacing of the top/outside bolts and the bottom/inside bolts (center to center). And you need to know the clock positioning of the cam. • You also need to know the whether there is 2 or 4 hub bolts.
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Weld-on Cam Installation: • Weld-on kits are one of the few that we have direct matches for ModelNumber. (Brkt 101352 – Hendrickson SC13, Watson-Chalin SL1195)(Brkt 101439 – Hendrickson SC20) • Some welding required on cam side. Back side has 2 hub bolts.
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Match up information with that in the schematics guide • https://www.minimizer.com/product-category/on-the-truck/bracket-systems/lift-axle-brackets/
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Steerable Fender Bracket Specifications: • • Each drawing on the schematics represent the configuration of a spindle backing plate relative to the brake camshaft location. The drawings are designed to be viewed from the outside of the wheel looking in on the driver’s side of the vehicle. • • The location of the camshaft tube and the spacing of the cam-tube-flange mounting bolts are also shown in detail. • • The location of the camshaft tube along with the pattern of the camshaft tube mounting flange bolts, are the factors that determine which bracket kit is required for each axle configuration.
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Installation: • Proper installation has the fenders tilted back (towards rear), approx 15°. • This will help knock down rocks, etc.
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Installation: • MIN161200 – Brackets mount on outside of the fender. • MIN2218/2220 – Brackets mount on the inside of the fenders. Cutting inside spray ring may be necessary.
Steerable Lift Axle Kits: • Questions to ask: • Is this a single or dual tire lift axle? • Is it a steerable lift axle or straight lift axle? • What weight axle is it? (8k, 13k, 20k) • What is the Axle Mfg & Model Number, and Brake Mfg? • OEM or Aftermarket install? • If OEM, what type of truck? • 2 Bolt, 4 Bolt, or Weld-on Cam Flange? • What position (clocking)? Verify Fwd or Aft • If 4 Bolt, what are the measurements of the bolts? • 2 or 4 hub bolts?
