CAM In Practice • Rarely assessed or discussed with allopathic healthcare providers • Evidence base to support CAM safety and efficacy is limited and at times, methodologically flawed • Incorporating CAM information into allopathic treatment plans may help patients better manage their health Integrative Healthcare Specialist

  4. Integrative Healthcare Specialist • The UW School of Nursing offers an advanced practice nurse (APN) certificate in Complementary & Alternative Medicine/Healthcare (CAM), preparing APNs and allied health professionals as Integrative Healthcare Specialists Integrative Healthcare Specialist

  5. CAM Program Focus • The CAM Program addresses • Wellness & health promotion • CAM therapies and their evidence related to their safety & efficacy • Methodological issues • The CAM Program emphasizes • Cultural Competence • Collaboration & cost-effectiveness Integrative Healthcare Specialist

Integrative Healthcare Specialist • Bridge the gap between allopathic & CAM for optimal patient care management • Use CAM knowledge to improve patient care • Better assess patient use of CAM modalities • Determine safety & efficacy (e.g. some herbal remedies do not mix with certain allopathic medications) • Create a system for referring patients to CAM providers • Create comprehensive integrative treatment plans Integrative Healthcare Specialist

The Program • Available to healthcare professionals with graduate degrees and current matriculated graduate students • 18- credit program; 9 credits must be graded & at a 500+ level; 3 credit capstone project (or graduate project/thesis/dissertation with CAM component) • Most courses available as individual electives • All required courses are distance-accessible Integrative Healthcare Specialist
