Mixtures • Atoms of more than one type of element that are physically mixed but DO NOT chemically bond. • Ex: trail mix, back pack, locker • Components maintain their original properties • CAN be separated by physical means.
Compounds • Atoms of more than one type of element that are chemically bonded together. • Ex: water, cake, table salt • Property is often different from the properties of the elements that combine to form them (they become something new). • CAN NOT be separated by physical means.
Compound or Mixture? • Water • Air • Muddy water • Ice • Sugar water • Sand • Sugar salt • Salt water • Carbon dioxide
Compound or Mixture? • Its components can be separated by physical means • It has properties that differ from those of its separate elements • It can be formed by atoms sharing electrons • It can be formed by negative and positive ions joining • It is made up of two or more compounds • Its components keep their own properties • It requires a chemical change to be separated
Types of Mixtures • Solution – a mixture of two or more substances that is homogeneous at the molecular level; a solution consists of a solute and a solvent. • Homogeneous – a mixture in which every sample of it has the same composition • Heterogeneous – a mixture in which every sample of it might have a different composition.
2 or more elements that are combined
Compound vs. Mixture Lab • On Friday, September 7, 2007, bring to class an example of a compound or a mixture. All items (edible and non-edible) will be labeled for lab and identified as compound or mixture by students. Then, we will “clean up” the lab. Yum! Yum!
