More important recent papers: • Melia: • Spin, precession and variability of Sgr A*. • Linear Polarization images near the event horizon • Compact Dynamo • Narayan, Quataert, Yuan: • Particle acceleration in RIAFs • Blandford, Begelman, Beckert, Falcke … • Circular Polarization (Conversion & effects of the Kerr metric).

  19. MHD Models 50 μpc(150 Rs) • New generation of 3D magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) nonradiative accretion flow models are setting new paradigms for accretion theory. • The start to look like the real thing! • Accretion is driven by turbulent stresses generated self-consistently by the magnetorotational instability (MRI). • Convection is controversial. • The resulting flow has three components: a hot, thick, rotationally-dominated Keplerian disk; a surrounding magnetized corona; and a magnetically-confined “jet” along the centrifugal funnel walls. • Inside of 10 gravitational radii, the disk becomes very hot, more toroidal, and highly intermittent • Sgr A* is the main test case …! • My oppinion: until these calculations do not produce a real jet in a natural way, there is some important physics missing! predicted size at 43 GHz Azimuthally averaged slice of a 3D MHD-simulation(Hawley & Balbus 2002) See also Igumenshchev, Narayan, & Abramowicz (2003) for alternative calculations

  20. Summary • There always was a very strong interaction between theory and observations for Sgr A*. • The intense discussions on Sgr A* have significantly sharpened and clarified our view of accretion in black holes. • Some model predictions have come true … • We will be able to agree on a single theory… • … once the last theorist has died.
