ISLAMIC BELIEFS * Islam is based on the belief that there is only one God and believer’s must obey God’s will. * ISLAM means “Submission to the will of Allah.” * Followers of Islam are called MUSLIMS. * The holy book of Islam is the Qur’an (word of God revealed to Muhammad.)
5 Pillars • Shahadah: The profession of faith. • Salat: Prayer • Zakat: Tax • Sawm: Fasting • Hajj: pilgrimage • Other Beliefs: jihad, afterlife, tolerance of other races, diet, marriage, women, dress. ASSIGNMENT: 6 Groups. Everyone must find information on each of the 5 pillars and “other beliefs.” Find as much information as possible. You may use your textbook and your technology. You will be grade on the amount of information you find.
THE 5 PILLARS: BASIC ACTS OF WORSHIP 1) Shahadah (profession of faith): “I testify that there is no god except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah". *Recited in prayer.
THE 5 Pillars 2) Salat (ritual prayer 5 times a day): *Dawn, Noon, Midafternoon, Sunset, and Evening. *Must cleanse the body before praying and remove shoes to “not contaminate the holy ground.” *Must kneel on prayer rug facing the Kaaba in Mecca.
THE 5 PILLARS 3) Zakat (religious tax): *Annual 2.5% tax used to help the poor and the needy. *May also donate acts of service for additional divine rewards.
THE 5 PILLARS 5) Sawm (fasting during Ramadan): *Ritual fasting is an obligatory act during the month of Ramadan. All Muslims must abstain from food, drink, and sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk during this month, and are to be especially mindful of other sins. The fast is meant to allow Muslims to seek nearness to Allah, to express their gratitude to and dependence on him, to atone for their past sins, and to remind them of the needy. During Ramadan, Muslims are also expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam by refraining from violence, anger, envy, greed, lust, harsh language, gossip and to try to get along with each other better than normal. In addition, all obscene and irreligious sights and sounds are to be avoided.
THE 5 PILLARS 4) Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca): * Must be performed at least once in a lifetime. * The purpose of the Hajj is to show devotion to Allah and to search for self-improvement.
THE SHI’A 7 PILLARS • The ordering of the pillars as understood by Shi’a Ismailis is as follows: • walayah (meaning love and devotion) for Allah, the Prophets, the imam and the dai. • taharah meaning purity and cleanliness. The Druze however changed this pillar to shahada, meaning statement of faith. • salah meaning prayer. • zakah meaning purifying religious dues. • sawm meaning fasting. • hajj meaning pilgrimage to Mecca. • jihad meaning "struggle".
OTHER MUSLIM BELIEFS *Tolerance for other cultures and races. *No eating pork. *No drinking alcohol beverages. *Friday afternoons are dedicated to prayer. *Study the life of Muhammad and apply his teachings to your everyday life. *Violence is justified if it is aimed at those who persecute Muslims. *No priest or central religious authority.
JIHAD JIHAD: “Struggle to defend the faith.” * Sometimes referred to as the sixth pillar of Islam. * Muslim holy war or spiritual struggle against infidels. * Any Muslim who dies during the Jihad will be rewarded with a spot in heaven.
