The Iranian Revolution1979 How did the Revolution start and what is the status of US/Iranian relations today?
But First… • What is the main reason for conflict between Israel and the Palestinians? • Why has it led to anti-American feeling in the region among some Arab countries?
Iranian Revolution: Background • Who was SHAH REZA PAHLAVI? • The “king” of Iran for four decades • The U.S. wanted him in power b/c he was sympathetic to the West, not the Soviet Union during the Cold War
What kind of a ruler was he? Ruthless? Reformer? Created modern economy Strong middle class Gave vote and rights to women • Led a one-party state • Use of secret police to control people • Suppressed dissent violently
Why was he disliked? • Seen as a puppet of the United States • Conservative Muslims disliked reforms • Middle class wanted more political freedoms
The Ayatollah khomeini • Spiritual Shiite leader of conservative Muslims • Leader of the Revolution • Promised to make Iran an Islamic THEOCRACY (religious government) independent from Western influences • “Death to America!”
The shah flees • When? Jan. 1979 • Shah flees to the U.S. to seek medical treatment (and to escape revolutionary elements) • …and doesn’t return!
The ayatollah khomeini in charge • Autocratic Islamic regime led by Khomeini and the mullahs • Revolutionary Guards as “spiritual enforcers” • Women lose rights • Torture and imprisonment
The hostage crisis • What? Iranians stormed U.S. embassy in Tehran Oct. 1979 • Why? Angry at U.S. allowing Shah into country for treatment • 66 Americans held for 444 days – Released January 1981 • “Argo”
Current status/issues • Khomeini died in 1989 • Young middle class more favorable to America than Iran’s leaders are • Current president: HASSAN ROUHANI • Replaced Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • Fear of nuclear weapon developments
