  4. What is Namaste? - Namaste is a Sanskrit word that means “I bow to you.” - Namaste is a way of greeting others with respect. - For Hindus, it is a divine blessing that honours the sacredness and equality of the other.

  5. The Gestures of Namaste - Greeting someone using Namaste also includes body gestures: - Arms are bent upward from the elbow - Palms are together as in prayer and in front of the chest - As the word “Namaste” is spoken, bow slightly from the waist

  6. The folded hands indicate a meeting of the minds. The bow shows love, respect, and humility.

  7. Namaste’s Spiritual Meaning - Hindus use this form of greeting in prayer. - It also expresses a belief in a common thread that unites all things. - There are many interpretations of the spiritual meaning of Namaste.

  14. Puja - Is the most common form of Hindu worship - It can involve worshipping one, or multiple deities - Hindus believe that there is only one God (Brahman), but, that this Being has many different forms

  15. Puja - Most Hindu families have a place of worship or shrine in their home - The shrine is decorated with a MURTI, which is the image of the deity being worshipped

  16. Puja - Before the worshippers enter the room, they remove their shoes - Then the MURTI is washed and decorated with garlands or flower petals - The worshippers make an offering of fruit or sweets to the deity - And finally, the worshiper may put his or her hands over the lamp flame, and then touch their forehead, as a sign that they’re receiving the deity’s blessing

  17. Puja - Puja can also take place at the MANDIR, or Hindu temple - Temple services involve the singing of MANTRAS (sacred sounds, words or phrases) - Puja video

  18. Sacred Space Assignment If you were to create a sacred place in your home, what would it look like? What objects would you put there? Why? What forms of prayer would you use to express your devotion? Write a paragraph or draw a picture, with labels, describing your sacred place.
