  3. Definition • Leeward slope is the opposite of a mountain opposite to where the wind is blowing • Windward slope is the side of a mountain which is facing into and is hit directly by prevailing winds • Precipitation is rain

  4. Formation • Relief rain happens in areas where a line of hills run along the coast • When wet onshore wind meets the base of a coastal hill, it rises along the slope and cools to form clouds

  5. Formation • Precipitation then occurs on the windward slope of the hill • On the leeward slope, air sinks, and is warmed and further dried by compression • Relief rain is very dense and is a cold mixture of precipitation
