1. Topic and Learning Goal Project topic: Service Learning for Quality Enhancement in Maths (SLQEM) Learning Goal: To enhance the learning achievement of primary school under-achievers in Maths (class I – V) thorogh additional academic inputs
2. Learning Objectives • To engage B.Ed students in providing additional academic inputs to the under-achievers beyond college hours • To facilitate self-development of the B.Edtrainees through content knowledge and pedagogical skills in maths • To provide B.Ed trainees a community service orientation • To enhance the learning achievement of primary class students in mathematics
3. Student analysis • All the participating students are 12th class or above students • A heterogenous group in terms of prior education background, gender, locale, socio-economic status, value orientation, etc
Project Description • Primary education is the foundation for next higher levels of schooling and college education. A student must possess satisfactory level of achievement in the curricular subjects of Maths, Mother Tongue, English and Environmental Studies. However, its seen that many students at elementary levels fail in maths or have poor achievement. Often, students also develop maths phobia.
Project Description (contd) • In order to overcome this problem for the village students who have less scope for private tuitions, and their parents no or less concern about the education of their students, the graduate teacher trainees (B.Ed) can be a great help thorough an extension program like service learning. The project aims at providing coaching to the maths under-achievers in surrounding villages of TEIs in India and Bhutan involving B.Ed students free of cost. The teacher educators from India and Bhutan, the participating students as well, will collaborate using ICT tools in implementing the project.
