  1. GCSE Maths Enhancement Programme Derbyshire Network 3rd December, 2013

  2. 16-19 Study Programmes English and maths at GCSE are essential qualifications for further or higher education and employment. Students who do not hold an A*-C in these subjects will be expected to continue to study towards them as a part of their 16-19 Study Programme. (EFA Update on the 16-19 Funding Formula 2013/14)

  3. 16-19 Study Programmes This requirement will be enforced by making the study of English and mathematics a condition of the student place being funded from September 2014. (However, the Richard Review proposal to make achieving GCSE-level qualifications a compulsory component of apprenticeships has been shelved.)

  4. 16-19 Study Programmes The condition of funding will be met if students are enrolled on: • GCSE Mathematics • Functional Mathematics • Free Standing Maths Qualifications Functional Maths and Free Standing Maths Qualifications are seen as ‘interim’ or ‘stepping stone’ qualifications on the journey towards GCSE.

  5. Pass rates for GCSE re-takes Source: Department for Education (2013) Level 1 and 2 attainment in English and mathematics by 16 to 18 students: academic year 2011 to 2012

GCSE Maths Enhancement Programme • CPD programme, funded by DfE, BIS and ETF • Developed by National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM) • Organised &delivered regionally through the Association of Centres for Excellence in Teacher Training (ACETT) • Aims to up skill existing numeracy/functional skills teachers to teach maths to GCSE level • 6 days face-to-face activity over 4 months, blended with personal support activities • £100 fee per person

GCSE Maths Enhancement Programme: Content Enables teachers preparing to teach GCSE Maths to: • Develop subject knowledge at this level; • Develop pedagogical skills, including use of technology to engage learners in mathematics; • have access to a range of resources for teaching GCSE Mathematics; • gain a deep understanding of the content of GCSE Maths and of the needs of students re-taking or working at this level for the first time.

  9. Maths Enhancement Strategic Hubs (MESH) Regional strategic hubs, which will: • Identify & work with key regional partners • Liaise with colleges & providers to clarify workforce development needs • Co-ordinate the work of professional development leads to ensure high quality support for maths teachers MESH steering group memberships currently being established, for first meeting in January 2014.
