Leading Up To the Rebellion • The three contending prairie residents are unhappy with their distant government. • The Metis and White settlers were petitioning the government for their legal land claims and getting no where. • The Natives of the region accused the government of not respecting their treaties, many natives were starving and Ottawa showed indifference to their plight. • Then Louis Riel was brought back from exile by the Metis, he first tried the political route (sent in another petition.) but that had no effect.

  3. The Event and it’s Impacts on the society • In 1885 the rebellion breaks out and the Metis had lost the support of the White Settlers and was never able to gain a firm support from the Natives. • The Battle of Batoche lasted 3 days and resulted in the defeat of the rebels, and execution of Louis Riel. • The execution of Louis Riel divided the young country along French and English lines. • Nothing was Reconciled.

  4. The Importance of this event to the Nationalism of its Country • I feel this event has helped lead to the division of French and English Canadians and has slightly weakened Canada’s Nationalism.
