Reading Incentives • Accelerated Reader • The Accelerated Reader program is used to help students achieve their million words they are required to read each year. • Students are recognized for being million word readers, through a “program” called who wants to be a millionaire. • Newberry Award Challenge • Students are recognized for reading five Newberry Award books. This is the first year that we have tried this challenge at the advice of our Principal.

18. Programs • Book Fair • Each Fall and Spring, Scholastic Books bring in the Book Fair. The Book Fair has materials for everyone, including books for teachers and older students. • Reading Bowl • CRMS students read books from the Georgia Book Award nominee list, and then compete in a quiz bowl competition, based upon the books. (Henderson) • Used to help students become a better over all students by increasing standardized test scores, increasing vocabulary, and promote cooperation.

19. Programs • Film Festival • Jones County puts on an Annual Film Festival for student produced work encourage students to begin to use technology for the 21st Century. The films are all students written, produced, filmed, and edited. • Each year there is a huge “party” celebrating the winners.

20. Facilities Policies • The media center adheres to the policies set forth by the state. • Requires that each student have an Acceptable Use Policy signed and on file. • Students are required to have a consent form for photos, videos, or other student produced work.

21. Facility Policies • Student Use • The library is open from 8:05 to 3:00 most days of the school year. Students are required to have a pass from their teacher. They can have checkout the book pass or an extended stay pass that allows them to do research, read, use the computers, or do make-up work. • In order to accommodate more students, I would open the media center at 7:30 to allow students the opportunity to come before school begins and close about 3:30. School hours are 8:05 to 3:03.

22. Facility Policies • Scheduling • Teachers are allowed to schedule whole, partial, or individual sections in the library. The one thing that the media specialist ask before she allows them to schedule is that they discuss with her the plans and why they will be using the library. • Teachers are allowed to checkout books (class sets and single books), technology equipment, and other manipulatives that can be used in class.

24. Media Center Impression • The media is located in the middle of the school. However, it gets used minimal due to teachers not forcing students to read as much. • A major concern with the layout of the media center is that the computers can not be easily monitored from the circulation desk. However, due to Impero (a tracker program) the parapro and media specialist are able to view students screens. • Storage is a major problem for the media center because they “collect” all the technology that is out of date or that no one uses and it takes up valuable space that could be used for storage or a teacher work area.

25. Media Center Impression • Technology is widely available to teachers in their classrooms. All academic teachers have a SMARTBoard, the math teachers have an ELMO and a InterWrite Board. They have two student response systems on each hall. There is an additional computer lab outside of the media center that they are able to use when scheduled.

30. New Media Center • The media center would be painted a warm, bright color, with new art work by perhaps local artist or students. • Plants would adorn the corners. School spirit gear would be on top of the bookshelves to give it a connection to the rest of the school. • During the holidays or season, decorate for these holidays or season and celebrate all occasions.

More Books • The one thing that everyone, both students, teachers, and current media specialist ask for was new class sets of books and more current books. • Students wanted the ability to check out the newest book. A section would be created for students to post comments about the newest books they had read.
