  2. Outline • Field Observations • Behavior and Affective Categories • Data Collection Sheet • Driver Anxiety Parallel Video Capture

  3. Outline • Field Observations • Behavior and Affective Categories • Data Collection Sheet • Driver Anxiety Parallel Video Capture

  4. Field Observations • Based on quantitative field observation method in (Baker et al, 2004; Rodrigo et al, 2007) • Students used the software in groups of 10, one computer per student • Two coders observed each student for 20 seconds, moved on to the next student, circled back to the first student • Observers were synchronized by a common timekeeper

  5. Field Observations • Observers coded only one behavior and affective state per time slice • Only the first behavior and affective state were coded • Observers stood diagonally behind the subjects • Observers stood still or moved, depending on the better vantage point

  6. Field Observations

  7. Field Observations

  8. Outline • Field Observations • Behavior and Affective Categories • Data Collection Sheet • Parallel Video Capture and Affect Coding

  9. Behavior Categories • On-task • On-task conversation • Off-task conversation • Off-task solitary behavior • Inactivity • Gaming the system • Observation guide discussed in Baker, et al., 2004 and Rodrigo et al., 2007
