  2. 1* • Check physician’s orders & hospital policy • Obtain/check supplies for procedure

  3. 1* • Wash hands

  4. 1* • Enter room, introduce self appropriately (name, what going to do)

  5. 1* • Identify patient using two forms of I.D. • explain purpose and procedure

  6. 1* • Ensure privacy.

  7. 2 • Don clean gloves.

  8. 3 • Prepare client by proper draping.

  9. 4* • Connect syringe to appropriate catheter port and withdraw all fluid from balloon.

  10. 5 • Instruct client to take a deep breath, pinch tubing and gently remove catheter.

  11. 6 • Allow urine to drain from tubing into collection bag.

  12. 7 • Provide perineal care if needed • Assist client to a comfortable position.

  13. 8 & 9 • Measure urine output • Dispose of urine, catheter and equipment

  14. 10 • Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene.
