How to Insert an IV Catheter By Alexis Stringham Communications 1010-406
IV CATHETERS • Why are IV catheters important? • How to successfully insert an IV
WHY IV CATHETERS ARE IMPORTANT • IV’s are critical in uses for rehydration measures (Ellis, Healthline article) • IV’s are used for antibiotic therapy (Research Communications, 2013) • IV’s are used in critical resuscitation measures (Whitehead, 2009)
DISCLAIMER This instruction does not legally certify you to insert IV's on a real person. PLEASE DO NOT PERFORM THIS SKILL UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED AND LEAGALLY CERTIFIED
HOW TO BEGIN STARTING AN IV • Wash your hands • Apply gloves

HOW TO PREPARE TO INSERT THE IV • CLEAN THE SKIN OVER THE VEIN YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO USE WITH A STERILE ALCOHOL PREP • ALLOW THE ALCOHOL TO DRY • PULL TRACTION ON THE SKIN TO ENSURE THAT THE VEIN WILL NOT MOVE AS THE NEEDLE PASSES THROUGH THE SKIN
HOW TO INSERT THE IV INTO THE VEIN • HOLD THE NEEDLE AT A 30 DEGREE ANGLE TO THE SKIN • WHILE HOLDING TRACTION, QUICKLY PUNCTURE THE SKIN, ENTERING INTO THE VEIN
HOW TO INSERT THE IV INTO THE VEIN (cont) • WAIT TO SEE A FLASH OF BLOOD THROUGH THE CATHETER • PULL THE NEEDLE OUT OF THE PLASTIC, WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY THREADING THE PLASTIC INTO THE VEIN
HOW TO SECURE THE IV • MAKE SURE THE IV IS THREADED ALL THE WAY INTO THE VEIN • TAPE IT TO THE SKIN WITH THE TAPE OF YOUR LIKING • FLUSH THE IV WITH A STERILE SALINE TO ENSURE THE LINE IS CORRECTLY IN THE VEIN AND THE BLOOD HAS BEEN CLEARED FROM THE TUBING • REMOVE THE TOUNIQUET
REMEMBER PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!
