O’Neill Sea Odyssey:Presentation to Santa Cruz Port Commission
O'Neill Sea Odyssey provides a hands-on educational experience to encourage the protection and preservation of our living sea and communities.
O’Neill Sea Odyssey (OSO) engages 4th – 6th grade students with an education program in navigation, ocean and watershed ecology, and marine science. • Classroom is the Team O’Neill catamaran and a shore-side education center. • We primarily serve Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties.
Program is free, each class completes a community service project. • OSO pays for bus transportation from the school to our site. • In addition to field trip, free ocean science curriculum for client classrooms.
Last school year: 201 classes, 5,281 students. 96,868 served since 1996.
This past school year: • Most students had never been on the ocean. • Income level: 69% on USDA free/reduced price lunch program.
Adam Webster Memorial Fund Provides for an individualized experience for youth with special needs. “These gifts are mostly present in their smiles. Their faces tell the story and their story brightens every heart that comes close. When we ride the O'Neill Sea Odyssey andget to become scientists, the opportunityis pure magic!” - Tom Simpkins, Special Education Teacher, Scotts Valley, 2015.
Short and long term impact: • In 2016-17, student comprehension rose from 70% to 94%. • 2013 SJSU study found 75% retention 5-7 years after program.
Alumnus from Watsonville Andres Salgado, former OSO Amesti student returned 14 years later now as a 6th-grade teacher to bring his own class. “Well it’s the first time on a boat for many, some of them haven’t even been to the beach! The kids remember these lessons better because it’s a different environment, they get to see things in person, not in front of textbook or computer screen.”
Classroom science curriculum online… OSO curriculum is now sold nationwide through the Pepper Network on Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. Will provide revenue and a national audience.
Education Center • OSO spent $1.5 in mostly donor funds to renovate O’Neill Building for education center, Surfrider water test lab, tenant revenue. • OSO has asked the Santa Cruz Harbor for an additional 25 years on its lease for long-term stability. Instead of 2028, would expire in 2053.
Endowed funds • Jack O’Neill & Harry Hind Fund, $1 million, generate $40,000/year. • O’Neill Sea Odyssey Fund, $720,000, to generate $30,000/year.
Planning • 2019-2023 Strategic Plan under development this year. • Expanding our Advisory Board, continue to build donor base.
