The Union States • During the Civil war the United States were separated into four different parts, • The union states, • The boarder states, • The Confederate states, • And territory. Unionstates Territory Confederate states Border states
The reason for the Emancipation Proclamation • The main reason for the Emancipation Proclamation was not to free slaves, but to “save the union” • Abraham Lincoln even wrote a letter to Horace Greeley, publisher of the New York Tribune saying that his main object in this struggle [Civil war] is to save the Union, and is neither to destroy or save slavery.
The result • The Emancipation Proclamation Freed all slaves living in the states that had left the union. • As a result most former slaves worked as laborers or joined the Union military, which eased the Union’s shortage of soldiers. • The Emancipation Proclamation also hurt the south’s hope of getting help from Britain and France,Since most British and French citizens opposed slavery France and Britain supported the Union instead.
