CHAPTER 1-5 Summary • John Grisham's novel, The Firm, opens at the Bendini Building on Front Street in Memphis, Tennessee. • Mitch (Main Character) is a new lawyer at the firm and came from a broken family. He had seen hard times and is looking forward to the stability that accompanied a new career. • Despite these pressures, he and his schoolteacher wife, Abby, enjoy a happy marriage. • Perks include a new BMW, a low rate mortgage, country club memberships, a full pay-off of acquired school loans, and vacations to corporate properties around the world
The secret security center ( in the firm’s building) is managed by a retired detective by the name of DeVasher. In that capacity, he spies on each of the employees, including the prospective recruit Mitch McDeere. DeVasher is also busy watching and recording two associates named Kozinskiand Hodge, who are allegedly in contact with the FBI. • Instead of being greeted warmly, when visiting Lamar (senior lawyer) and Kay (Lamar’s wife), they are shocked to find Lamar and Kay grieving for the loss of two of the firm's associates, Hodge and Kozinski, who had just died in a scuba diving accident.
Chapters 1-5 Characters • CHARACTERS: • MITCH MCDEERE: Main Character, Lawyer • ABBY MCDEERE: Mitch’s wife, schoolteacher • WAYNE TERRANCE: FBI agent • DEVASHER: Head of security at the Firm “Bendini, Lambert and Locke”. Receives orders from LazarovMorolto(Mofia) in Chicago • NATHAN LOCKE: Unlike all of the other lawyers at Bendini, Lambert and Locke, Nathan was not recruited. As a child he ran errands for the Morolto family. • AVERY TOLAR: Lawyer & Mitch’s Mentor at the firm
Chapters 1-5 Analysis • As readers we learn: • That for some unknown reason, the firm is particularly careful about whom it hires. • The firm hires only young men who will be fiercely loyal • Mitch= loyal, very little family ( has wife/dead brother/brother in jail) • Kozinski and Hodge are introduced and the reader is curious about what they could be telling the FBI. • DeVasher tells us about the first plans for getting rid of Kozinski and Hodge have been completed. • It is explained to Mitch that Avery Tolarwould be his mentor, and Mitch would be working exclusively on Avery's files
