  1. How to prepare a successful experiment proposal Miguel Angel Garcia Aranda CELLS-ALBA Scientific Director g.aranda@cells.es

  2. Outline • Experience • Proposal idea • Proposal writing

  3. If you do not have the appropriate experience, don’t worry, ask to someone else (with experience). • Check different sites. For instance at: • http://www.wayforlight.eu/eng/home.aspx

  4. Which beamline and where

  5. Experience / Proposal idea • Do not hesitate to contact: • Experts you may know. • BL scientists. • Ask for a feedback about your idea / planned experiment • Ask for a critical reading of the proposal • The idea has to be of (relative) general applicability/interestas it would be compared with others • Average acceptation rate is close to 1 out of 2

  6. Proposal writing http://www.wayforlight.eu/eng/how-to-write-a-successful-proposal.aspx

  7. Proposal writing Most of the synchrotrons have some help to write a proposal. For instance, ALBA and DESY for PETRA-III. There is always a template for each synchrotron although wayforlighthas created a general template accepted for most synchrotrons http://www.cells.es/en/users/applying-for-beam-time http://photon-science.desy.de/users_area/users_guide/write_a_proposal/3_how_to_write/index_eng.html

  8. Proposal writing Be aware that your proposal will be very likely judged by a panel does not needto be fully expert in your specific field. • Tips. • Be concise and clear. • Emphasize (somewhat) the general applicability • Show previous results /measurements • Use (if possible) one or two graphics with the previous characterization • State clearly the experimental plan/methodology (usually it is very good to discuss it with someone from the beamline team) • State clearly the expected results and their impact • State briefly the need for synchrotron radiation and why laboratory data(or other characterization techniques) are not enough (if applicable). • Include some references but not too many. • If possible, include one high-impact (or two) references with your previous work in this particular subject.

  9. Proposal outcome Don’t be depress if you don’t get beamtime the very first attempt. If you are not successful, try to improve it and resubmit it !
