  1. Energy long ago • 1950s • Heating in the home • People would have heated their homes with coal and turf. • This is a turf fire. • Turf comes from bogs

Energy long ago • 1960s-1970s • Central heating • Tanks filled with water were installed at the back of the fire and when the fire was on it would heat up the water .This was pumped around the house to heat radiators • But turf and coal was still in use • Electric fire would also heat up homes

  3. Energy long ago • 1980s • As people got wealthier they move on to oil and gas central heating • In Ireland gas was discovered off the coast in the sea and was used to heat homes, schools and buildings

  4. Energy long ago • The government banned the use of coal in the main cities because when there was low air pressure the smoke mixed with fog to make smog. • This was bad for peoples lungs. • People could only use smokeless coal.
