Purpose • Select a Core, Tier 1 reading program for all 16 elementary schools in Bellevue
What led to the decision to adoptnew materials? • Data - Nearly 30% of students district-wide are not meeting standard • Classroom Observations - Inconsistent literacy blocks from room to room, school to school • District-wide Materials Inventory - revealed that overall, our schools lacked similar instructional materials to effectively teach literacy • Teacher Feedback - nearly 3 out of 4 teachers surveyed said they did not have adequate resources to teach the 5 Big Ideas
Objectives • Review both Good Habits, Great Readers and Journeys using the Curriculum Evaluation Tool • Review survey feedback from field study teachers • Hear in-person testimony from field study teachers regarding their experience with the materials • Review data collected at the start and end of the field study
Program Layout – Things to know! • Good Habits, Great Readers • Shared Reading Teacher’s Guide (Spiral) • Guided Reading (Binder) • Word Their Way • Journeys • Teacher’s Guide per Unit (one month) • Teacher’s Guide divided into Lessons (one week) with sections for Whole Group and Small Group instruction • Student Anthology • Grab and Go • Projectables
Begin the Program Review • 9:00-11:00am - Beginning Reading/Decoding • 11:00am-12:00pm - Fluency • 1:00-2:30pm - Vocabulary & Reading Comprehension
Review Survey Results and Feedback • Do you see any trends emerging? If so, what do you notice? • How does this align (or not align) with what you observed in the program you examined today?
Protocol for Field Study Teacher Testimony • 1-5 minutes • Teachers should highlight what was effective or not effective about the materials, how they did/didn’t support them and/or their students. • Can include anecdotal information and stories or data or examples of materials they found to be useful • Questions will not be taken.
Thank You! • We will begin promptly at 8am tomorrow, Tuesday, February 1. • Bring a lunch or plan to go out for lunch. • Please review any of the survey data that you were not able to read through this afternoon. • Questions?
