  2. Do-Now(Survey/In Journal) Answer the True/False questions on Hand-Out 3-9: “Am I Sleep Deprived?” If you answered True to 3 or more of the 15 items, it is likely that you are not getting enough sleep.

  3. “Sleep Debt” • James Maas’ Theory of Sleep Deprivation: • Experimenting with time cues has concluded that people may require 9-10 hours of sleepper night • Sleep vs. Wakefulness are like bank transactions: • Hours slept are like deposits into our bank account of sleep • Hours of wakefulness are like withdrawals • A one-hour sleep loss per night for a week is the equivalent of pulling one all-nighter • People often find themselves in sleep debt (cumulative negative effects of not getting enough sleep)

  10. Insomnia • Insomnia: • Recurring problems of falling or staying asleep • Affects 1/10 adults (1/4 older adults) • Causes: • Stress/Anxiety • Depression • Drug/Alcohol abuse • Irregular sleep schedules

  11. Narcolepsy • Narcolepsy: • Uncontrollable sleep attacks • Sufferer may lapse directly into REM Sleep, often at inopportune times • Affects 1/2000 people • Etymology: • Narco: “numbness” • Lepsy: “seizure” • Causes: • Neurological

  12. Sleep Apnea • Sleep Apnea: • Temporary cessations of breathing during sleep and repeated awakenings • Affects 1/20 people • Etymology: • Apnea: “without breath” • Causes: • Enlarged tonsils • Obesity • Recurring infection

Night Terrors • Night Terrors: • High arousal and appearance of being terrified • Unlike nightmares, night terrors occur during Stage 4 sleep, within two or three hours of falling asleep • Seldom remembered • Affects mostly children • Causes: • Sleep Deprivation/Fatigue • Stress/Anxiety • Fever • Intense stimulation of amygdala during sleep • Extensive Stage 4 sleep (children)

  14. Sleepwalking/Sleep Talking • Sleepwalking/Sleep Talking: • Walking/talking during Stage 4 sleep • Often not recalled • Affects mostly children • Causes: • Heredity • Stress/Anxiety • Sleep deprivation • Extensive Stage 4 sleep (children) • Sedative medications
