Health Care Aide/Red River College Partnership • Great introduction for those considering a career in almost any area of health care • Second semester • Offered to Grade 12 students that have met high school graduation requirements • Students earn Health Care Aide Certificate valid across most of Canada • Can be used as a laddering opportunity in nursing/medicine • Five Grade 12 credits • If you are interested in this program, please speak with Mr. Hordeski today.

  5. High School Apprenticeship Program

  6. High School Apprenticeship Program • Program that allows students to begin collecting apprenticeship hours while still in high school • Skilled trades based (carpentry, electrical, roofing, plumbing, ag technician, automotive technician, hairstyling, millright, many more) • Paid salary • Up to 8 credits towards high school graduation • Homework is getting a job with someone that will apprentice you • If you are not able to participate in the High School Apprenticeship program, but are interested in a career in the skilled trades after high school, please see Mr. Hordeski for further information.

Credits For Employment • Viable option for students short of credits, but currently employed. • Able to earn up to two credits towards high school graduation (one at the grade 11 level, and one at the grade 12 level • Does not come with a mark/complete/incomplete • Requires Career Development pre-requisite • Connect with Mr. Hordeski in order to learn more, including how to earn the Career Development pre-requisite (if you do not already have it)

Volunteer Credit • Connect with your Grade Level Counsellor/Mrs. Bertholet • You may not be in need of credits, but the service of volunteering is invaluable when it comes to awards and bursaries • You need to get on this now, so that you are not scrambling when it comes to bursary applications. • Volunteer opportunities at Wellness Fair 12:20-1:20 December 18th, 2019

  10. Military Co-op • Afternoons Second semester • Minimum age of 16 • Receive BMQ (Basic Training) • Military Drivers’ License • Salary • Two credits towards high school graduation • See Mr. Hordeski for more information

  11. Honour Roll • To be included on the Grade 12 Honour Roll, a student must have maintained an 80% average in the following seven courses: • Math 40, English 40, Phys. Ed 40 (pass), and four best electives

  14. After graduating from high school, there are many different paths that you may follow. • GAP year – a year-long break between high school graduation and post-secondary • Directly transfer into the world of work • Move directly into post-secondary education

Post-secondary EDUCATION • When it comes to post-secondary education, you may have to determine if you wish to go to College or to University • Colleges generally offer programs of study that can be applied towards a career. Some colleges offer courses that lead to certification in specific areas. Universities focus on academic and professional programs as well as careers.

What you need to begin to think about when it comes to post-secondary education. • Explore careers/What do you want to do? • Figure out which degree/diploma/certificate will get you there • Research potential degree options • Decide which college or university is the best fit for you • ****myblueprint is a great resource for this*****

  18. Some university basicsWhat is “Direct Entry”? • Some programs offer a Direct Entry • This means you can apply to go into a program directly from high school. Ex. Business, Engineering • How am I selected? You will be selected based on pre-requisite high school courses, as well as by your marks. • When possible, Direct Entry is a fantastic route to move into a program.

Some university basicsWhat is “Advanced Entry”? • Advanced Entry • Some programs require you to achieve a certain number of university credit hours and a certain GPA (Grade Point Average) in the courses in order to apply. • These programs do not offer a Direct Entry. • Ex. Nursing at the University of Manitoba • University 1 could be a possible route.

Some university basicsUniversity 1 (Specific to u of m) • University 1 is a great place to begin your first year if… • You do not meet the higher admission requirements for Direct Entry to a specific faculty • There is no Direct Entry and you need to complete specific admission requirements and university courses in order to enter your program of choice. • You are unsure about which program you wish to pursue.

  21. U of M • First Year Planning Guide/Helps to identify… • what courses you need to take in your first year. • what high school courses you need. • what career opportunities are connected to that degree.

Post-Secondary time-lineSeptember, October, and November • You need to begin to start doing some research on your own. • Meet with Ms. Bousquet to explore post-secondary options and to make sure that all of your high school requirements are met in order to apply for your desired program • Colleges and Universities will be at PCI the morning of November 21st to promote their programs. YOU NEED TO ATTEND THIS. ****Don’t limit yourself to one institution/learn about them all.***** • All Manitoba universities online applications open as of October 1st • You require a MET # to apply. Please see Ms. Bousquet in the Career Centre or either office to get your number.

Post-secondary time-line February • This is the month that colleges and universities offer their Open Houses. • If you leaning towards attending a certain college or university, you are strongly urged to attend one of these events. • By this time, you should be registered at your desired institution as it makes you eligible for entrance scholarships. • Please note that after March 1st, you will not be considered for Direct Entry into programs

What are your responsibilities in all of this? • Start researching now! • Meet with Ms. Bousquet to discuss post-secondary options and to ensure that you have the required high school pre-requisites for your desired program. The Career Centre is the best place to start for all “next steps”. • Make sure that you are signed up with the REMIND app • Read and acknowledge REMIND notices • Attend post-secondary day and campus tours/ask questions/take materials • Register for your desired post-secondary program • ***Important Date*** Student Grad Meeting/February 11th Multi/Bursary Meeting to follow (Attendance at this meeting is mandatory to apply for bursaries)
