Physical Self-Care?!?!?! • With what double theological challenge may the Lutheran called worker wrestle when it comes to the issues of caring for his/her own physical health?
Paul’s Brief References in 1 Timothy to Physical Self-Care • 1 Timothy 4:8 “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” • While this is admittedly a “passing reference” (“training” is a figure of speech suggested by previous verse - Γύμναζε δὲ σεαυτὸν πρὸς εὐσέβειαν)… • …the NIV makes it “weaker” than it is! • Similar temporal meaning of πρὸς ὀλίγον in James 4:14 • 1 Timothy 5:23: “Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.” Why shouldn’t it surprise us that encouragements such as these are relatively rare in Scripture?

Five Essential Health Questions • Are you remembering you are not the Savior? • sacrificing your physical & emotional health saves no one and may rob you of years of productive ministry • Are you getting enough sleep? • significant health impact much more/less than 7 hours (“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for he grants sleep to those he loves” Psalm 127:2.) • Are you guarding down time? • saving 7 of 21 “blocks” (pieces or days) yields @ 56 hour work week – sufficient time to honor all your holy callings? • Are you scheduling regular exercise? • compensate for sedentary nature of 21st century ministry (shift from team sports to lifetime sports?) • Are you making wise choices for your diet? • avoid excesses of fast-food, pre-processed culture
In setting aside an appropriate amount of time for rest, relaxation, and recreation for the sake of our physical and emotional health, we are also here living by faith and not by sight. Psalm 46:10
