Trimming the Fat • Before you turn in your final drafts of your narratives, I wanted to give you some practice at trimming the fat in other people’s writing. This HOPEFULLY will make it easier for you to look at your own work with a critical eye.

What is Figurative Language? • Figurative language is language that contains or uses figures of speech, especially metaphors. • Figures of speech are any expressive use of language, such as metaphor, simile, personification, or antithesis, in which words are used in other than their literal sense, or in other than their ordinary locutions, in order to suggest a picture or image or for other special effect.
Figurative Language Response Journal • THE PURPOSE: To practice identifying examples of figurative language and note the author’s purpose. What is the effect of the figurative language on the reader? In other words: why did the author choose these particular words and phrases? • YOUR TASK: Identify examples of metaphor, simile, imagery, personification, and symbol (one each).
