Goals of the Greenbook Doug Rotman, LLNL February 22, 2001 NERSC-NUGEX meeting
What information do we want the Greenbook to provide • NERSC is a facility that enables great science • hence, the Greenbook should talk science • The Greenbook should describe the current high level of scientific achievement • It should also project simulation science “at the next level” that can be attained through the application of high end computing • Provide guidance to NERSC towards the implementation of these high end platforms
Who is the Author?Who is the audience? • Authors: the entire set of programs in the Office of Science • HENP, FES, BES, BER and ASCR • Audience: • Office of Science: provides statement of capabilities and “persuasion material” for future DOE support • Suite of Gov’t agencies: OMB, OSTP, … providing vision for DOE simulation science • NERSC: Platform needs/characteristics, User’s needs, guidance for future procurements, ...
Greenbook organization/content/timing • Thanks to Bas Braams for an initial outline -- comments please! (see handout) • No need to make the document endlessly long • Presentations form the basis for Greenbook sections • Would like to have main content available for NERSC-4 procurement • Complete by beginning of FY02?
Issues to keep in mind • Do we provide a scientific vision of where we are and where we are going? • Do we provide the information needed to get there? • Does is address issues across all offices of DOE Office of Science? • Does it address the complete ensemble of simulation science: science, computational science, advanced mathematics, hardware, software, analysis, ….
