Romans Chapter 12 “Let love be without hypocrisy” “Not lagging in diligence” “Fervent in spirit” “Rejoicing in hope”
“Abhor what is evil, cling to what is good” • Romans 12:9 • “Abhor” – to hate intensely, to shudder, carries with it the idea of “loathing” • “regard evil with horror” (Wey) • Romans 2:22 “abhor idols” • Psalm 119:163 “abhor lying” • Deuteronomy 7:26 “abhor…accursed thing” • “Hate” – Proverbs 6:16-19 • “Detestable” / “Abomination” – Deuteronomy 22:5; 18:9-12
Christians Accused of being “Hateful” or “Haters” • Do not endorse or support sinful behaviors culture considers to be correct • God’s people not appreciated in the New Testament either – 1 Peter 4:4 • “HATER” > “CHRISTIAN” • “Dislike” and “Abhor” Worlds Apart! • How many things really make you shudder? • What disgusts you? • There are times when this category is too small
Abhorring Evil a Challenge Because of Packaging • Isaiah 5:20 “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil…” • Intoxicating Beverages – Proverbs 20:1 “Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.” • Proverbs 23:29-35 “Do not look on the wine when it is red…it bites like a serpent and stings like a viper.” • Find it hard to condemn fornication, homosexuality because they know someone involved
When God Said: • “I hate divorce” (Malachi 2:16) • Fail to see the entire picture (i.e. adultery, fornication, homosexuality, unscriptural divorce) • “You have dealt treacherously” (Malachi 2:14) • Lies, betrayals, broken vows & promises, and deception • Tears and groaning (Malachi 2:13) • Digging into any sinful behavior – regrets, sorrow, depression, heartache and misery
God has a Very Good Reason for Abhorring Evil • AND SO DO WE! • Galatians 6:8 “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.”
Romans 12:9 “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.” • “Cling” – to join fast together, to glue, cement • Matthew 19:5 “be joined to his wife” • “Wed yourselves to what is good”
What Is The Difference? • How do I know when I “like” something and then I truly “love” something? • Here is what I have found: • Likes can get bumped – Mark 10:21 • Willing to sacrifice everything else for what we love- Matthew 13:44-46 • Love is consuming – Matthew 22:37
Let’s Make Some Applications • David loved God’s Law – Psalms 119:97 MEM. Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.” • Is Scripture a “like” or a “love?” • The more you read Scripture the more you’ll want to read Scripture
Let’s Make Some Applications • David loved to worship God with God’s people – Psalms 122:1 I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go into the house of the LORD." • Is coming to worship a “like” or a “love?” • Do we “love” the idea of being with God eternally? • Do we like thinking about God or do we realize all He’s done for us and all that He means to us to the point that we hunger and thirst to be with Him? • Psalms 42:1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.”
