Language Arts • Reading: • Novels, short stories, poems, essays, and articles will be read • Equal emphasis on both fiction and non-fiction • Review and analyze effect of Literary Elements (character, setting, plot, theme) • Analyze the main idea of a passage is and its significance to the comprehension of the passage. • Generate questions, make inferences, draw conclusions, • Writing: • Students will study and write narratives, arguments, and informative/explanatory texts throughout the year. • Students will study and utilize the writing process. • Students will also conduct short and extended research projects. • Vocabulary: • Emphasis on word studies. • Analyze and study the meaning of root words, prefixes, and suffixes, and apply these skills when determining meanings of words. • Understanding context clues while reading • Continue development of and expansion of working vocabulary. • Speaking, Listening, and Language Skills will also be emphasized!
