Environments supporting users involvement in the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) cycle, and allowing: • Co-Design of services using a variety of user-centered methodologies • User Experience studies for testing and evaluating products and services • End-users involvement in real-life or as-real-as life settings • As «facilities», they: • Seek to be accessible by external “guests” and capable of providing User-research services • Are managed by a “host” according to a business model ensuring long term sustainability • May involve Public-Private-People stakeholders(Local governments, research institutions, large enterprises and SMEs, users representatives bodies) 2

  4. The «Open Lab» working model • RDI methodological consultancy • User-centric research operations management • User Panels involvement and commitment • Setting up and management relevant partnership E&LLs Catalyst User: RDI service demand • Living Labbing Guest client Guest client Guest • Innovation Host Open Lab: RDI service and asset supply Services 3

  5. Experience & Living LabsExploit KIC-wide use of Experience & Living Labs to foster Education, Research and Business integration and innovations • Innovation goal / impact: Exploit KIC-wide Experience & Living Labs to foster ERB integration and innovations • Output(s): Experiments, data, impact assessment • Definition of added value: Support lab selection processes, sharing of tools, methods, and best practices, and development of lab access protocols. Perform experiments to test and modify product and service designs, in close collaboration with end-users, and in real-life or real-as-life settings. Share experiment data for increased added value. • Performance indicators: # labs, # experiments, # end users involved, # data collected and shared • Intended use: Application tasks either related to transforming a carrier lab to a joint EIT ICT Labs facility through value adding work and limited capital investments, or performing experiments in a carrier lab • EIT funding: Real cost up to 150 k€ / application Catalyst lead Fabio Pianesi FBKpianesi@fbk.eu 4

  13. Our value proposition Guest KIC partner • To KIC partners interested in applying the E&LLs Catalyst • Being supported by an expert in designing and performing E&LLs Catalyst Task within proposals • Being connected with relevant Open facilities capable of boosting R&D by making available ready-to-go assets and services Guest KIC partner Guest KIC partner • To KIC partners owning/coordinating Experience & Living Lab facilities: • Support in adopting a service-provisioning working model and in designing viable Business models • Access to KIC funding for performing experimentations on behalf of KIC partners Host Open Lab Host Open Lab Host Open Lab 12

  14. Catalyst policy 2013 (TBD) • Applying the E&LLs Catalyst means to access an Open Lab (for sustainability reasons) • Open Labs are “certified” by the Catalyst, as they go through a coachingprocess • Partners interested in applying the Catalyst must interact with the Catalyst Team during Activity proposals design: the Team provides matchmaking (partner + Open Lab) • Depending on adherence to such policy, the Catalyst Lead will provide AL leaders with a quality check report on activity proposals • Activities not including an Open Lab will have to be monitored by the Catalyst

  17. How to apply to programs? Support programs are free of charge and, this year, budgeted in the E&LLs Catalyst Coordination Activity (Submitted to the research Catalyst Development AL) 14

  18. E.g.: how do and work? • Program #2 • Program #3 • Two parties • Guest: a KIC partner involved in User-centric RDI (using the E&LLs Catalyst) • Host: an Open Experience & Living Lab facility • Matchmaking • The Host decides what services is capable and willing to provide and at what conditions (e.g. according to the available in-house assets and access policies) • The Guest looks for the right Expert (#2) or the right Lab (#3) and the proper services for its RDI purpose • Clear functions • The Guest must provide the “service-core” (SW, core-HW, processes, etc.) • The Host provides consultancy (#2) or basic ICT infrastructure and research operations (#3) • Clear responsibilities • The Guest is in charge of the service-innovation project and its results • The Host is in charge of providing services for boosting the RDI activities • Clear budget • Efforts are budgeted as specific E&LLs Catalyst tasks within relevant Activities 15

  19. A real example • Program #2 • Program #3 • Develops mobile services for stress management • KIC-funded • Performing service R&D • In need of methodological support • KIC-funded • Develops services for personal data management • Internal funding Other E&LLs Catalyst Task (Living Lab Project) EIT ICT Lab Task Turn Out Burnout – HWB Trento’s Internal project Mobile Territorial Lab Trento Experience & Living Lab • Provides consultancy on user-centered research methodologies • Ensure large-scale users involvement • Coordinate user-centric research operations • Provides ICT infrastructure (e.g. smartphones) • Ensure large-scale users involvement • Coordinate user-centric research operations 16
