John’s Notes!! First… I miss you all!! Second, how did you all like Rina’s presentation last week? Reading your papers, it seems that most of you took a lot away from it. Great! Third, some of you wrote about how careers in art are looked down upon in your cultures. Is it true that most of your parents frown upon you exploring art as a career? Fourth, many of you wrote that you want to make your parents proud by getting good jobs that pay well, maybe even take over the company business. How important is this to all of you?
What is Substance Abuse? • Substance Abuse is a harmful pattern of use of any substance for mood altering purposes which leads to frequent and serious problems. • These problems can affect performance at school, work or home. Many times, relationships begin to suffer. • Substance abuse is not simply drug abuse. It also includes the use in inhalants, solvents, alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes. Almost any substance can be abused.

Generally speaking,What causes substance abuse? • Research shows that having a family history of substance abuse makes a person more at risk for alcohol and drub abuse. • Also, individuals who have been victims of child abuse or who have been raised in poverty are more at risk. • When people, children, and teens especially, begin to have friends who use drugs or accept drug use as the “norm”, they are more likely to develop substance abuse issues themselves.

Some General Symptoms of Substance Abuse • Loss of interest in activities • Suicidal thoughts or threats • Forgetfulness • Decline in grade or work performance • Increased risk taking • Depression
