  1. Spatial Analysis of Statistics(with Special Reference to Qatar Census 2010) State of Qatar

  2. Spatial Analysis of Statistics Overview • Spatial Analysis of Statistics- Answering Where & How! • Spatial Analysis Techniques- Processes & Methods • Spatial Analysis of Census 2010 Results- Examples from QSA Data Users • Disseminating Spatially Analyzed Statistics- Printed, Digital and through Web Applications

  3. Spatial Analysis of Statistics- Answering Where & How!

  4. Spatial Analysis of Statistics -Answering Where & How! • Data Users are often not only interested in answering the- • “How much” question, but • “How much is Where” question • Spatial (Geographic) Analysis of Statistics- • Transforms Data into Information, and • Presents results to the users in a concise and easy to understand manner For Example- Population Distribution representation through Maps

  5. Spatial Analysis of Statistics-Answering Where & How! • Population Distribution (By Census Blocks) Maps Tables

  6. Spatial Analysis of Statistics-Answering Where & How! Maps • Population Growth 1986- 2010 Tables

  7. Spatial Analysis Techniques- Processes & Methods

  8. Spatial Analysis Techniques- Processes & Methods • Requires Geo-referencing & Coding of Data Units- • Spatial Analysis of Census Data requires proper Geo-referencing and Coding of Data Units for collection and representation of Data. • This is to be done at the time of Census Operations and a Census Geography Database is to be created, e.g., Qatar Census Geography

  9. Spatial Analysis Techniques- Processes & Methods- Census Geography Qatar Three Tier Administrative/ Census Data Unit Hierarchy 2010

  10. QATAR MUNICIPALITIES 7 ZONES (QARS) 90 CENSUS BLOCKS 4345 PLOTS (QARS) 150,000 Spatial Analysis Techniques- Processes & Methods- Census Geography contd.. • Qatar Census Geography- Census Data Unit Hierarchy 2010

  11. Spatial Analysis Techniques- Processes & Methods- Census Geography contd.. • Census Data Aggregation & Dissemination Units • Census Data Aggregated to Agency Specific Spatial Data Units

  12. Spatial Analysis Techniques-Processes & Methods- Census GIS Database • Zone Level- Census GIS Database

  13. Spatial Analysis Techniques Processes & Methods- Census GIS Database contd.. • Census Block Level- Census GIS Database

  14. Thematic Mapping-Spatial & Temporal Common Choropleths- Color Maps Advanced Dasymetric Mapping- using geographic layers such as Land use Volumetric Mapping- Estimating and Representing Statistics at small Data Units level for which Census data is not made available- e.g., for Buildings falling with in a Census Block Queries- Where & How and sometime answering Why! Transformation- Buffering- Point, Line & Polygon Spatial Analysis Techniques Processes & Methods- Some Prevalent Forms useful with Population data

  15. Contd.. Spatial Interpolation- method designed to fill in values that lie between observations (Samples). The type of analysis include- Kriging- estimate the values of unsampled sites- Thiessen polygons- assumes that the values of the unsampled data are equivalent to those of the sampled points. Centre of Population- used to display the center of population using the weighted average of x and y coordinates of populated points Cluster analysis- regards the distribution of points in space irrespective of their actual locations to determine whether patterns are random, clustered, or dispersed Hot Spots- are where high values are surrounded by high values, or cold spots, where low values are surrounded by low values. Spatial Analysis Techniques Processes & Methods- Some Prevalent Forms useful with Population data

  16. Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Thematic Mapping- Spatial Table Map

  17. Table 2010 Maps for Census Years 2004 1997 1986 • Darker the Shades Higher the Concentration of Population Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Transforming Mapping- Spatial & Temporal

  18. Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Thematic Mapping- 2D & 3D Mapping • 2D & 3D Representation of Census 2010 Population Data • Zone 22 & 23- (Data by Census Blocks 2010) 3D

  19. Dasymetric Mapping Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Dasymetric Mapping Before After 19

  20. Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Volumetric Mapping • Volumetric Mapping Population Data by Census Blocks Estimated Population Data by Buildings 20

  21. Census Blocks with Large Labor Gatherings- Census 2010 Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Query

  22. Zones Recording more than 200 % Growth in Population during 2004- 2010 Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Query

  23. Changing Concentration of Qatari Population in 25 Years Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Trends & Patterns

  24. Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Trends & Patterns • ThemeRepresentation- Changing Population Concentration (1986- 2010)

  25. Population Characteristics of a Defined Area- e.g., within 3 Km distance Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Transformation- Buffering Point Buffer surrounding Al khore Health Centre Line Buffer along the Al Shamal Road

  26. Method designed to fill in values that lie between observations (Samples). Spatial Analysis Techniques & Methods- Spatial Interpolation Cluster Analysis Hotspot Analysis
