Agenda/Topics to Be Covered • Our Goal: To inform you of the Benefits of Sustainable Communities and teach you the factors of Sustainable Communities • Classroom Policies: No Phones, No food, No drink, No gum, or Talking. Just Kidding • Special Projects: Classroom Activity at the End so make sure you pay attention and know your stuff • Summary: Overall we will be covering the different factors in having a healthy/sustainable community. These Factors consist of things like Transportation, Affordable Housing, and “Livable Community”
Background: What is a Sustainable Community? • A Sustainable Community is one that is Environmentally, Economically, Socially Healthy • Focuses on the Long Term affects • Overcomes challenges through integrated solutions • Creates a better quality of life
Transportation Public Transportation Roads Pedestrian Safe Allows Easy Access to people without Cars Forces People to consider less driving if they do have a Car Reduces the overall emissions of CO2 Includes safe bicycle lanes Narrower streets for less traffic jams and frequents cars Less traffic lights Creates safer environment Attractive pedestrian connections includes - Cross walks, almost at each intersection - This Ultimately increases health and enjoyment
Affordable Housing • Involves Human diversity and variety • Communities need to include both middle income and low income housing • Also a mix of housing types, condos, apartments, townhouses • Sustainable Features in Homes

Community Library • Provides a safe and educational environment • Free Internet access • Free books and Movies • Provides educational resources • Tutors • Mentors
Overall Benefits Ecological Protection And Much MORE Creates Networking and Welcoming Social environments Lower income families are able to be apart of a healthier community Helps people to learn how to be more sustainable Children live in safer environments • Helps cut down on pollution caused by cars • Grocery stores help cut down on jet fuel used to transport produce • Many can afford to live in one of these communities • There are many useful local resources • Green Spaces are used to help improve environment
What Can We Do? Write a letter Spread the word about sustainable communities VOTE Educate People about Sustainable Communities Promote new Apartment buildings or homes to be more Sustainable

Special Projects: The Game Class Activity: The Battle of Communities Game General Rules of the Game Role a dice to see how many spaces to take Choose between two sustainable choices for yourCommunity each space Try to create the most/best sustainable community Whoever has the best Sustainable Community by the EndWINS!!!! * Make sure to write down what your Community has on your note card as the came goes along. We will check at the End. • Everyone starts out with $3,320 • $100=$1000, $50=$500, $5=$50, $1=$10 • Every Team must have a banker: $1,720. The Banker collects money and gives Loans • Everyone gets 3 passes for a space • One pass = One Turn
