Mission To provide international leadership to optimize health and quality of life along the United States – Mexico border.
Goals • Institutionalize a domestic focus on border health that can transcend political changes • Create an effective venue for binational discussion to address key public health issues at the border
Issues of Interest • Border Health Information Platform (BHIP) • Early Warning Infectious Disease Surveillance (EWIDS) • Avian-Pandemic Influenza Actions (Avian Flu) • Plataforma Binacional de Información • Vigilancia Temprana de Enfermedades Infecciosas (EWIDS) • Acciones sobre la Pandemia de Influenza Aviar
Border Health Information Platform • Una iniciativa de la CSF en colaboración con el Centro Nacional de Estadísticas de los Estados Unidos (NCHS) y la Secretaria de Salud de México para establecer mecanismos para integrar y compartir datos de salud • Pretende mejorar la capacidad para evaluar e investigar los problemas de salud en la frontera • An initiative of the BHC in partnership with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the Mexico Secretariat of Health to establish improved mechanisms for border health data gathering and sharing • The initiative is intended to improve the capacity for assessment and research of border health problems
BHIP Actions • Conducted meeting of representatives of U.S. HHS (OGHA, OPHEP, and CDC) and Mexico Secretariat of Health in July 2006 to update progress of BHIP • NCHS and Mexico Secretariat of Health to draft strategic technical design of proposed BHIP • Reunión de representantes de México (Secretaria de Salud) y de Estados Unidos (DHHS, OGHA, OPHEP y CDC) en julio de 2006, de actualización de avances de la Plataforma Binacional de Información en Salud (PBIS). • El NCHS y la Secretaria de Salud de México diseñaron una propuesta técnicaestratégica
BHIP Actions • Inform NCHS Director on plan for BHIP and seek institutional support • BHC to report to BGC Health Work Table • BHC staff to coordinate with PAHO on potential support opportunities to the BHIP • Informar al Director del NCHS sobre la PBIS para obtener apoyo institucional • La CSF reportará a la Mesa de Salud de la CGF • CSF se coordinará con la OPS sobre posibilidades de apoyo a la PBIS
Requested Actions • Request commitment of the U.S. States to coordinate completion of the BHIP technical and implementation plan • Request support of the U.S. States in planning Federal-State technical meetings to insure collaboration of critical State-Federal experts (e.g., Vital Statistics, State Epidemiologists, etc.) • Requerir el compromiso de los estados fronterizos de EUA para coordinar el plan técnico y de implementación de la PBIS • Requerir apoyo de los estados americanos en la planeación de reuniones técnicas Federales-Estatales para asegurar la colaboracion de expertos estatales y federales (Epidemiologos estatales, planeación, etc.)
Early Warning Infectious Disease Surveillance (EWIDS) • Conducted meeting of representatives of U.S. HHS (OGHA, OPHEP, and CDC) and Mexico Secretariat of Health jointly with FUMEC* in July 2006 to update progress of the Mexico EWIDS initiative • BHC-US Section conducted meeting of US States EWIDS programs in August 2006 *US-Mexico Foundation for Science • Reunión de actualización de avances del Proyecto EWIDS-México entre representantes de los Estados Unidos (OGHA,OPHEP, y CDC), la Secretaria de Salud de México y FUMEC*, en julio pasado • La CSF sección americana, reunió a los Coordi-nadores EWIDS de EUA en agosto de 2006 * Fundación México-US para la Ciencia AC
Early Warning Infectious Disease Surveillance (EWIDS) • The BHC will host a U.S. – Mexico EWIDS Work Shop on October 24-25, 2006 • La CSF realizará un taller binacional EWIDS México/US el 24 y 25 de Octubre de 2006 en El Paso, TX
Avian-Pandemic Influenza Actions (Avian Flu) • Se propone un foro Binacional de Influenza Aviar y Pandémica dentro de la Reunion de la CSF en noviembre de 2006 • Se propone un simulacro de Influenza Aviar y Pandémica dentro del marco de la Reunión Anual de la CSF en Febrero de 2007 • Proposed BHC Binational Avian-Pandemic Flu Forum in conjunction with the BHC Meeting in November 2006 • Proposed BHC Binational Avian-Pandemic Flu Table Top Exercise in conjunction with the BHC Binational Annual Meeting in February 2007
Requested Actions • Request BGC HWT support for Binational Avian-Pandemic Flu Forum and Table Top Exercise in conjunction with BHC Meetings in November and February • Solicitar apoyo a la Mesa de Salud de la CGF para realizar un Foro Binacional sobre Pandemia por Influenza Aviar y Simulacros dentro de las reuniones de la CSF en noviembre y febrero
