Research QUESTION: • Is an individual’s hand length related to the amount of time it takes to type a 51 word paragraph? • The first quantitative variable is the length of an individual’s hand from tip of middle finger to the bottom of the palm. • The second quantitative variable is the time it took an individual to type a 51 word paragraph in seconds.
Study design: • We conducted this study be collecting data from 40 individuals. We had them measure the length of their hand from base of palm to top of middle finger in inches and then all type the same 51 word paragraph while timing it. The data collection plan included creating a survey online and spreading it through out our Facebook website asking people we know to take part, also we asked random people in person to do the survey. • Our paragraph: “How does grilled cheese made with tomato and bacon sound? It’s yummy, I tell you! I also testify in favor of a grilled cheese with pesto and slices of tomato. The only hope for a plain old American cheese on white bread sandwich is when you dunk it in tomato soup.”
Difficulties encountered: • The main difficulties that we encountered was getting people to want to participate in the survey even if it was only the 2 questions. It was difficult to have people respond in a timely manner. Along with individuals wanting to respond at all. Many people seemed to ignore the survey and didn’t want to be bothered with it. On the other hand there is always the question of the individual’s answering honesty when collecting the sample data.

Statistics for length of hand Mean: 7 Standard Deviation: 0.92 Range: 4 ¼ Mode: 6.75 Outliers: 4.5 Five Number Summary
Statistics for typing speed Mean: 103.47 Standard Deviation: 27.65 Range: 95 Mode: 120 Outliers: None Five Number Summary
Statistics for testing the correlation between the two variables • Equation of the Regression Line: Y=-6.4289x+147.83 • R=-0.215 • Critical Value: 0.312
analysis • By examining the scatterplot, it appears that there is an insignificant correlation between the two variables. Taking a look at the histograms both distributions are skewed left. When analyzing the linear correlation coefficient (R=-0.215), again seeing the suggestion of an insignificant correlation between our two variables. Then I compared the value for R(-0.215) with the critical value (0.312) and found that 0.215<0.312.
Interpretation: • The linear correlation coefficient R = -0.2518 This suggests a weak negative correlation. Comparing R=-0.215 and critical value 0.312 it is apparent that 0.215<0.312. Showing the significance of a negative correlation between the two variables.
conclusion • In conclusion, by gathering a random sample of 40 individuals, analyzing and creating charts for each variable and testing the correlation between the two variables with the linear correlation coefficient, line of regression and critical value, we concluded that there is an insignificant linear correlation between the length on an individual’s hand and the time it took to type a 51 word paragraph.
