Introduction • A bat’s scientific name is pipestrelleus • Bats are nocturnal animals • Bats are the only flying mammal This is the Philippine bamboo bat.
What bats look like • Bats are flying mammals • They have long, black wings • They have pointy ears • Fur is usually brown or black • Two legs but only Vampire bats can walk • Their wings are like fingers • They have a pointy nose and canine teeth
More Physical Features This is a vampire bat on a treadmill. • Body usually 1 ft. long without wings • With wings usually 2.7 meters • Large external earflaps but can be very small • Two small nostrils above mouth- not always visible • Small eyes

Habitat • Caves • Peoples attics • Abandoned buildings • Bat boxes • Near Rivers
Lifespan • Usually fifteen years in the wild • 9-13 years in captivity • 50% of the bat types are endangered
Predator and Prey Bat’s prey • Insects • small animals • fish • blood from mammals Predator to: Bigger sized birds Piranhas--(Only to Fishing bat) Any carnivores they try to feed on– vampire bats
Reproduction • Usually 1-3 babies • Come with mother hunting • Are on their own in 1 and a half years • They are born blind and deaf.
Physiological Adaptations • T heir body has the ability to fight off all diseases known to bats within three months. • Their fingers have turned into wings so they can fly • They don’t need blood pumped into their wings which keeps them thin and helps them fly • They are warm-blooded which helps their climate
Behavior-How they act • Mostly very calm • Easily scared • Shy • Very sensitive • Very patient • They make squeaky sounds • They fly out of caves together always to the left.
Behavioral Adaptations • They can sense predators from 3 miles away which makes it easy to catch them • patient to catch prey • Smart– helps them stay fit and find prey • They build their own nurseries in safer spots than the roost where they eventually live…this keep the babies safe. • Have echolocation to find prey
Physical Adaptations • Bats have fur to keep them warm during all four seasons • They have brown-black fur to camouflage • Big wings to help fly fast and maneuver • Big canines to scare off predators
