ADVANTAGES OF OF THE MDIs: • UNESCO’s credibility to national governments as a neutral organization. 2. Government’s direct involvement allowing for a sense of national ownership. 3. Comprehensiveness of the MDIs: not a partial check list of specific indicators.
HOW WE USED THE MDIs? • MDIs applied in response to request from the Government. • All relevant stakeholders informed before hand on the launch of the research and invited to get involved. • Field visits to three Provinces specially on Community Media. • First draft physically and formally submitted to Prime Minister’s Information Office (Gabinfo). • Minister of Education and Culture formally asked to open the National Conference.
HOW WE USED THE MDIs (cont) • Press Freedom Supporting institutions • A brief note on the Research Outcomes and Recommendations prepared and sent to President’s office via Gabinfo. • Media Institutions, the Judiciary and Parliament invited and participated in the National Conference and made valuable comments and recommendations.
HOW WE CAME WITH THE RECOMMENDATIONS? • Following a thorough checking of all key indicators against different means of verification: a) existing research; b) reports on democracy & Governance issues; c) field visits and interviews to Media Institutions’ leaders, managers and editors.
