  1. Basic Skills Overview

  2. What is Basic Skills? • A program offered to reinforce skills in math and language arts/reading • The goal of basic skills is for students to improve sufficiently to exit the program and perform satisfactorily in the regular education classroom.

  3. Who teaches Basic Skills? • Certified teachers will work with the students during the times described previously. They will communicate with the student’s regular classroom teacher verbally and in writing via the ISIP (Individual Student Improvement Plan).

  4. When is Basic Skills offered? • K-grade 1 meets during the school day. • Grades 2-5 meet two days per week after school for one hour each. Bus transportation is provided. • LANGUAGE ARTS- Monday/Wednesday • MATH Tuesday/Thursday

  5. What is covered? • Basic Skills lessons are dependent upon the needs of each student based upon communication between the BSI teacher and regular classroom teacher (i.e., ISIP, informal meetings, etc.)

  6. Skills covered may include: • Kindergarten • Reading readiness • Math • Motor skills • Listening skills

Skills covered may include: • Grade 1 • Reading • Alphabet • Phonetic awareness • Sight vocabulary • Comprehension • Word meaning • Directions • Language • Writing process • Punctuation/capitalization • Sentence structure • Creative writing • Math • Number recognition • Patterns • Addition/subtraction • Measurement/Geometry • Money/time • Problem solving

Skills covered may include: • Grade 2-3 • Reading • Alphabet • Phonetic awareness • Sight vocabulary • Comprehension • Word meaning • Directions • Study skills • Language • Writing process • Punctuation/capitalization • Grammar • Spelling • Sentence structure • Paragraph structure • Creative writing • Math • Number recognition • Patterns • Addition/subtraction/multiplication/division • Measurement/Geometry • Money/time • Problem solving

Skills covered may include: • Grade 4-5 • Reading • Phonetic analysis • Structural analysis • Vocabulary • Comprehension • Interpretation • Research skills • Language • Writing process • Capitalization/punctuation • Sentence structure • Paragraphs • Grammar • Proofreading • Math • Computation • Number concepts • Measurement • Geometry • Problem solving

  10. What materials are used? Teachers draw from many resources and work with the students on the necessary skills. Examples include: • Classroom texts • Supplementary texts and worksheets • Computer software and web sites • Hands-on games and manipulatives

  11. Attendance • Students are expected to attend each class. If you know that your child will not be attending, please send in a note to your child’s teacher. • Attendance is taken each day and a phone call may be made if your child is absent from BSI and a note was not sent.

  12. If school is closed early due to weather conditions, basic skills will not be held. • Also, if school is in session for a four hour day, basic skills will not be held.
