Jospeh Cornell Analysis • Website is unique and strange. • Collector of ephemera. • Gained inspiration from old book shops to second hand shops. • Between (October 6th 2007-January 6th 2008), his work was displayed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. • Cornell says that the materials he uses can be found everywhere. • His main set of work is in the “Worlds In A Box” collection. • Planet Set, TeteEtoille, Guiditta Pasta (1950)

4. Ken Garland Analysis • “Derive ideas from the world around you, from your background, from your childhood, from relationships with others, from the social and political environment. Don’t be confined to a pond, in which the water is always in danger of becoming stagnant”. This quote is important and has some vital keywords in it, for example, (Background, Childhood and Relationships). The “Don’t be confined to a pond” part shows that having only one idea and staying with it is an incorrect technique to follow, so its best to have a few. • British graphic designer. • Interest in ethical and political issues. • Pieces such as “Brand Manuals” and “Idea No.114” use centralised text and specific colour schemes. • “Down By The River”, “Galy Tots”, “Type Only Round up Week 4”.

5. Marcel Duchamp Analysis • French-American painter and sculptor. • Work bases around surrealism and cubism. • Worked with Richard Hamilton to make a replica of “The Bride Stripped” between 1915-1923. • “Nlade Descending A Staircase, No.2” (1912). • “Bicycle Wheel” (1913). • “In Advance Of The Broken Arm” (1915)

6. Joe Tilson Analysis • English sculptor, painter and printmaker. • An interest of carpentry to create woodwork pieces. • The mid 1960s was when he used gridding and structuring to his work. • “R-Rhyme and Ritual” (1969-1970) (made using screen printing). • Returned to working with wood in 1972. • Explored the theme of Pre-Classical Mythology in the 1980s. • “So Far” (1976), 12 different images of multiple colours, one of the 12 images shows the bottom half of a person and a tulip where the top half would be. Also there is an image in the bottom left showing a maze and the text “Maze”, which I think looks similar to the “In Silico” album artwork by Pendulum. • “Demeter, Diptych”(1990), this piece of work shows an example of gridding, he has used oil paint and has been able to fit the work within the style of contemporary art. The title, Demeter references to the Greek goddess, letters of the Greek alphabet and images such as a hand and star are used to spell the word, Demetra.

7. Richard Hamilton Analysis • His collage piece “Just what is it that makes todays homes so different?” created in 1992, is probably his main piece of artwork, it shows a sense of change, for example, the circuit board walls and the planet Jupiter show advancements of science and technology. However there are some sections of the image that show developments of a certain something, the microwave on the table and the satellite dish. But there are some odd features, the female bodybuilder posing in front of an image of the Iraqi war, there is also the text “aids” next to the Jupiter image, it looks to be in a pop art format, it also looks similar to the Renegades album artwork by Rage Against The Machine, written in 2000. This was also a year technology advancing made its mark on society and the way we live with technology. • First exhibition to display Hamiltons work was the Hanover Gallery, London (1995). • Won the “1960 William and Noma Copley Foundation Award”, “2000 Order of the Companions of Honour” and “1960 John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize”. • “Swingeing London 67 (1968-1969). • Glorious Techniculture (1964).

8. Quay Brothers Analysis • Timothy and Stephen Quay • Won the “Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set Design” in 1998 for “The Chairs”. • Film directors and animators. • Specalise in stop motion animation. • Made multiple short films such as, “The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer” (1984), “Duet” (2000), “NocturnaArtificialia” (1979). • Worked with polish composer (Leszek Jankowski), swiss writer (Robert Walser) and Russian French animator (WladyslawStarewicz). • Worked with Nikon and Coca Cola for advertising using stop motion and animation.

9. Storm Thorgerson Analysis • Film maker and graphic designer. • Makes album and CD label artwork. • Created artwork for bands such as Pink Floyd, BiffyClyro, Muse and Audioslave. • The work is strange and abstract, sometimes it is illusional. • Thorgerson designed the “best of” album for Pink Floyd, showing someone laying down showing the soles of the feet, doors can be seen as well. • “Stomp 442” (1995) (Anthrax), shows a scrap metal ball, it is real size, based in an American scrapping area to show Anthrax are American , and the metal ball references to the fact that the band base around Metal music. • “Dark Side Of The Moon” (Pink Floyd). • “Watercolour” Single (Pendulum), shows a river with black cubes in the water, in random positions. • Did a selection of work under the collection of “Roughs” including drawings and poster designs.
