Where does the Big Blue Planet stand in the big picture? • The Earth is the 3rd planet closet to the Sun in our solar system of 9 (8 now I guess)planets. Our solar system is part of the Milky Way galaxy.
Earth’s movement: • Rotation – the earth spins on its axis once every 24 hours. This allows for equal amounts of access to daylight.
Earth’s movement: • Revolution – the earth revolves around the sun once every 365 ¼ days. This is also referred to as an orbit. The moon orbits us! • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIFRvog_xGU
The Important yet ignored factor! • Tilt – the earth’s axis is tilted 23 ½ degrees perpendicular. • This means that earth wobbles in a sense, as the sun’s rays strike different places on the earth between 23 ½ north and 23 ½ south. • This is the determining factor in the creation of seasons.
How far does it tilt? • 23 ½ degrees N – 23 ½ degrees S: the Tropics (low latitudes) • This area has the most solar energy. • 23 ½ degrees N & S to 66 ½ degrees N & S of the equator is the temperate zones or (middle latitudes) • 66 ½ degrees N & S are the polar regions or (high latitudes)
The bottom line…. • Yes it creates the seasons! • But without tilt, life on earth could not and would not exist!!
When and where of seasons Sun’s rays over the Equator on March 21 or 22 – SPRING (Vernal) EQUINOX (equal night in Latin) Equal amounts of daylight in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Marks the beginning of Spring.
It’s still tilting! • Sun’s direct rays over 23 ½ degrees N (Tropic of Cancer) is on June 21 or 22 – SUMMER SOLSTICE • Longest day of the year in daylight hours for Northern Hemisphere. Marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere
Tilting away from us • Sun’s direct rays are back over the Equator on September 21 or22 – AUTUMNAL EQUINOX. • Equal amounts of daylight again Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Marks the beginning of Fall.
A new season! • Sun’s direct rays over 23 ½ degrees S (Tropic of Capricorn) is on December 21 or 22 - WINTER SOLSTICE. • Marks the beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
And finally sort of • It tilts back toward the equator to continue the tilting cycle.
