  1. The Effects of Racial Stereotypes on Academic Judgment LAURA PEREZ JESSICA DELGADO RENIA KHODABAKHSH

  2. BACKGROUND Previous Research: • Content of the study: • Rapidly categorize two target concepts with an attribute • Faster responses are more strongly associated in memory than slower responses • Assessing attitudes towards stigmatized groups • Conducted by: • Greenwald, A. G., McGhee, D. E., & Schwartz, J. K. L. (1998). Measuring individual differences in implicit cognition: The Implicit Association Test.

  3. Hypothesis Negative traits are associated with African Americans whereas positive traits are associated with European Americans

  4. PARTICIPANTS 20 CSUN students in PSYCH 321- Lab 1 course (3 Males and 17 Females)

  5. Materials:Questionnaire • Demographic Information: • Age • Gender • Ethnic Background • Personal preference for one category over another: • African Americans • European Americans • Survey: • Choosing the ethnicity that participants associate with each slide

  6. MATERIALS:Sample Photos European American African American Harvard University https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/‎

  7. Two equal groups randomly assigned • 5 seconds were presented for each trait • Athletic • Argumentative • 10 seconds were presented for each phrase • Cheating on a test • Academic Effort Procedure:

  8. Results:Questionnaire

  9. Results: descriptive statistics

  11. discussion • Findings failed to support hypothesis • Results were influenced by word choice • Previous research proved that negative traits are associated with African American and positive traits with European American (Chang & Demyan, 2007). • Other attributes • Typical positive traits were linked with African American and typical negative traits with European American • Athletic and gives up easily

  12. limitations • Small sample size • N = 20 • Word choice • Experimental Bias • Athletic = Positive = African American • Gives up easily = Negative = European American • Participation Bias • Participants left options unanswered • It was not implicit • Participants were able to think about their response due to time given • (fast readers vs. slow readers)

  13. Implications/Future studies • Closely replicate IAT • Instead of using a computer, participants must use pen • Variety of photos • Prevent carryover effect • Participants will be more engaged and responsive • Color pictures • Easier to distinguish between the two ethnicities
