Historical Context For John’s Ministry • Date - established by rulers in power • 15th year of Tiberius Caesar (About 26 A.D.) • Pontius, Roman governor of Judea, from 26 A.D to 36 A.D. • Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee, from 4 B.C. to 39 A.D. • Phillip, tetrarch of Ituraea and region of Trachonitis, from 4 B.C. to 34 A.D. • Annas and Caiaphas were high priests

The Baptism of John • “baptism of repentance” • From godly sorrow (2 Cor. 7:10). • Accompanied by outward actions (Matt. 3:8; Luke 3:8) • “for the remission of sins” • Jesus shed His blood for the remission of sins (Eph. 1:7) Eph 1:7 “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”

The Baptism of John • “baptism of repentance” • From godly sorrow (2 Cor. 7:10). • Accompanied by outward actions (Matt. 3:8; Luke 3:8) • “for the remission of sins” • Jesus shed His blood for the remission of sins (Eph. 1:7) • Baptized “into His death” (Rom. 6:3-5 • Water baptism commanded for remission of sins (Acts 10:47,48; 22:16)

The Baptism of John Question: How could John’s baptism provide remission of sins before Christ died? Read: Lev. 4:20 Heb. 10:3 Rom. 3:21-25 Heb. 9:12-15 Acts 19:1-5

Lev. 4:20 Thus shall he do with the bull. As he did with the bull of the sin offering, so shall he do with this. And the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. Heb. 10:3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.

Rom. 3:21-25 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it-- the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over former sins.

Heb. 9:12-15 He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of His own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Therefore He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

Acts 19:1-5 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism." And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Question: How could John’s baptism provide remission of sins before Christ died? Lev. 4:20 – “and it shall be forgiven them” Heb. 10:3,4 – “there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is impossible for blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” Rom. 3:21-25 – “in His forbearance had passed over the sins that were previously committed.” Heb. 9:12-15 – Christ’s death redeems those who sinned under the first covenant. Acts 19:1-5 – Those who had been baptized by John’s baptism were required to be baptized in the name (authority) of the Lord Jesus. Answer?

John’s Ministry • Many were baptized by John, confessing their sins (Matt.3:5,6; Mk. 1:1-5) • John’s mission? Prepare the way for the Lord as prophesied in Isa. 40:3-5. • Whom did John call “O brood of vipers” in v.7 and why? • Pharisees and Sadducees (Matt. 3:7) because they were deceptive like desert snakes –hypocrites, pretending to serve God but lying in wait to deceive all who would come their way.]

John’s Message • “bring forth fruits worthy of repentance” • V.8 True repentance which demonstrates itself by the fruit which it bears – actions which demonstrate a changed life. • Faith can’t be inherited • Jews’ false sense of pride and security. (John 8:38-42)

Fruits of True Repentance (3:10-14) • Question from the crowd: “What shall we do then?” Three groups, representative of the of three classes • 1) Average Citizens – the typical Pharisee and Sadducee • 2) Tax Collectors – “publicans” who were despised • 3) Soldiers – Abused authority • John’s Response: • 1) Practice your religion by sharing what you have. (Prov. 19:17; 1 Jn. 3:17) • 2) Deal fairly with the people. (Rom. 12:17,21). • 3) Don’t intimidate the citizens by your position of authority. (Matt. 7:12; 1 Tim. 6:6-8)

John’s Message, Continued3:15-18 • Jews reasoned to themselves about John, whether he was the Messiah. • Read Jn. 1:19-28 – Jewish leaders sent priest and Levites to inquire as to who John was. • John’s answer: • The “One” who was coming is mightier than John. • John would be as an unworthy servant to the Christ as master. • John baptized with water. • Those who refused rejected the counsel of God (7:29,30). This was the revealed will of God in relation to them. • Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. (Also Matt. 3:11,12; Mk 1:7,8)

John’s Message, Continued3:15-18 • Jesus would have all authority (Matt. 28:18) for salvation or eternal destruction (2 Thes. 1:7-9). Mt 28:18And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” 2 Thes. 1:7-8and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Genealogy of Jesus • Luke’s account of the genealogy of Jesus ascends from son to father, but not Joseph - Mary, starting with Eli (or Heli), the father of Mary and goes back to Adam. • Matt. 1 gives the genealogy of Joseph ascending from father to son beginning with Abraham. From David to Joseph, Matthew list only 27 names; Luke lists 42 names. • Luke’s account was primarily addressed to Gentiles (Greeks) for whom the Jewish legal lineage would have been meaningless. Therefore, the names are different from King David to Mary’s father. • Pre-existence of Jesus (God, the Son) John 1:1-18

The Temptation of Jesus • Also Matt. 4:1-13 and Mk. 1:12 (no details) • After baptism, Jesus was “full of the Holy Spirit” • The Spirit led Him into the wilderness. • Fasted there for 40 days • Tested during (in Luke’s account), and after (Matt. 4:2-3) fasting • After 40 days - Weak and famished (Heb. 2:14,15).

Three Devices of Temptation Tempted in all ways such as we are (Heb. 4:15; Heb. 2:18) • Command these stones be made bread • - Jesus’ response: “It is written..” quotes Deut. 8:3 • Worship me and the Kingdoms of the world shall be yours. • Jesus’ response: quotes Deut. 6:13 • Cast yourself from the temple and see if angels will stop your fall. Devil quoted Psm. 91:11,12 • Jesus’ answer – “It is written…” quotes Deut. 6:16 Did this end the temptation of Jesus? • V.13 The devil departed from Jesus for a season – or “until an opportune time.” (NKJV) • Other occasions: Lk. 10:25; Matt. 16:1; 19:3; 22-35; Jn. 8:6. • At the last supper: “continue with me in my temptations (trials), Lk. 22:28.

Jesus’ Ministry • In the “power of the Holy Spirit.” • Fame went throughout all the region • First miracle recorded in Jn. 2:1-12. Turned water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana. • Travelled from village to village in Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and healing the sick. • At first they honored Him but later rejected Him (Matt. 13:54-58). • Desired fleshly things rather than spiritual.

Jesus’ Ministry John 2:13-25 - After wedding feast in Cana,Jesus went up to Jerusalem for the Passover. • First time during His ministry, during which He: • Cleansed the temple of money changers and those who sold oxen, sheep and doves. • Taught Nicodemus that he must be born again (Jn. 3:1-21). • He and His apostles were baptizing (Jn. 3:22). • After John is cast into prison by Herod (Lk. 3:19-20), • Jesus returns to Galilee (Matt. 4:12; Mk. 1:14-15). • Samaritan woman at the well (Jn. 4:1-42) • Heals the nobleman’s son (Jn. 4:43-54).

In Nazareth • News of Jesus spread throughout the region of Galilee. • He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. • Attends synagogue in His home town of Nazareth. • Jewish custom of attending the synagogue on the Sabbath

In Nazareth • Jesus read Isa.61:1,2, a Messianic prophesy • “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me” (Jn. 3:34). • “anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor” (Isa. 66:2; Matt. 5:3). • “sent me to heal the brokenhearted” (Matt. 5:4; 2 Cor. 7:10) • “to preach deliverance to the captives” (Heb. 2:14-15). • “recovering the sight to the blind” (Jn. 9:39-41). • “to set at liberty them that are bruised” (Lev. 25:8-13; Jn. 8:32, 36). • ”to preach the acceptable year of the Lord”

Jesus in Galilee • Heals a man with an unclean spirit (4:33-37) • Evil spirit used the man to speak out against Jesus • Knew that He was the Holy One of God. Devils believe and tremble (Jas. 2:19) • Jesus rebuked the spirit and commanded it to come out. Mark (in Mk. 1:27) says, unclean spirits “obey Him.” • His fame spread throughout the region.

Bible’s teaching about demons: - Some translations use devils or unclean spirits • Very limited information • Allowed during the personal ministry of Jesus and His apostles • About 85 references to demons in NT; none in OT. • Subordinate agents of Satan who shared his wicked nature. • Superhuman power • Possessed some human traits, e.g. speaking, recognizing Jesus and trembling

Bible’s teaching about demons: - Some translations use devils or unclean spirits • Seized control of faculties and caused pain and suffering (Lk 8:26-38). • No indication that being possessed caused one to sin. • Purpose – CONFIRMATION, to illustrate the absolute supreme power of Christ over Satan and his forces (Matt. 12:28,29; Lk. 4:36) • Ended in first century. Four examples recorded in Acts (5:16; 8:7; 16:16; 19:13-16).

Jesus in Galilee • Heals Peter’s mother-in-law (4:38-41) • Sick with a high fever • Jesus rebuked the illness and it left her immediately • She arose and began to serve her guests. • Preaching and healing in Galilee (4:40-44) • Devils that were cast out knew that He was the Christ (4:40,41) • Why did Jesus rebuke the demons and not allow them to speak? • Healed many (4:42-44) • He healed every one who came to him or was brought to him – HE NEVER FAILED TO HEAL!!
