  5. What is a glen? • “Glen” is a Scottish word for narrow rocky ravine or valley • Mountains rise over 3,500 feet

  6. Flora and Fauna • Very little forest • only deciduous woodland is near river in Glencoe Village • Some conifers in the area • Grasses • moorland grasses, bog myrtle, cotton grasses

  7. How the area formed • Mountains carved out by glaciers • 380 Million years ago • Erosion has deposited soils in the glen

  8. History of Glencoe • 1692 Massacre • King William (3rd) ordered all clans to sign an oath of allegiance by Jan. 1 1692. The MacDonald clan chief, Maclain, of Glencoe had gone to the Inverlochy to sign the oath instead of Inveraray. When he did arrive Inverraray to sign the oath, it was Jan. 6th. • Maclain had returned believing that his signature was accepted. It was not. • Campbell of Glenlyon took a group of soldiers who were hosted by the MacDonald clan, not knowing they were there to kill them. On February 12th, they attached after being hosted for over 10 days.

  23. The New Course • Opened in 1895 • Increase demand for another course (new railroad) • Also has shared fairways and double greens on 3rd and 15th holes.

  26. Strathtyrum Course • Opened July 1993 • Links layout with 18 holes • Shorter and fewer bunkers

  27. Balgove Course • Opened 1972 • 9 hole course • Designed for children and beginners • Once had a rule that an adult could only play the course when attending with a child.
