  2. Our greatest foe? “Man is the only kind of varmint that sets his own trap, baits it, and then steps in it!”~John Steinbeck

  3. "What benefit did you get… from doing those things you are now ashamed of?" ~Romans 6:21

  4. And… those we serve? “How can we call ourselves a profession if we tell the public we have a ‘Code of Ethics,’ but continually ignore it? It’s time to stop lying to ourselves, and the public!” ~Gary White

  5. Wrong place… faster?~Law Enforcement Cultures, by Dr. Neal Trautman • Misconduct is an evolution of predictable and preventablecircumstances. • Virtually every significant case of employee misconduct had warning-signsthat “leaders” either simply ignored, or failed to recognize as important. • “Leaders” are at the coreof both the cause, and the solution to misconduct. • Research has confirmed that most scandals start with one employee doing relatively small unethical acts, that then grow to whatever “leaders” allow.

  6. Rational science defined: “Ethics… are moral values in action.” CLARIFICATION - CONFIDENCE - COURAGE ~The Ethical Warrior, Jack E. Hoban & Bruce J. Gourlie

  7. “Lead a life… worthy of YOUR calling.”~Ephesians 4:1

  8. “The Four Horseman of the Career Apocalypse” ~Dr. Neal Trautman, National Institute of Ethics ANGER - LUST - GREED - PEER PRESSURE

  9. Peer pressure? “You will never do anything in this world without courage. [It is] the greatest quality of the mind, next to honor.” ~Aristotle

  10. ~Saint Joan of Arc, 1412-1431 Ethics… The essence of “Ethics…” Is some level of caring! Ethics is bigger than compliance. Compliance is about doing what you have to do. Ethics is about doing what you should do. ~Michael Josephson

  11. Character… • An INWARD MOTIVATION to do what is right. • It is who you are, even when no one is watching. • The stable and distinctive qualities built into an individuals life which demonstrates their response regardless of circumstances. • Character… The ARMORthat protects!

  12. The choices you make? A.C.T. Identify Alternatives - Project the Consequences - Tell your Story *

  13. Ethical choice strategies…~Michael Josephson • The BELL: • The BOOK: • The CANDLE:

  14. And we must… Demand a Loyalty to Values! “When a person voluntarily accepts a position of public trust, they (we) take on new obligations. If they don’t want to live up to them, they are free to decline the job.” ~Edwin J. Delattre

  15. New obligations! • Succinct … direct, to the point • Understandable … defined, discussed • Reinforced … training, dialogue • Enduring … consistent, and ACTED UPON!

  16. The ripple grows… • Produce a trained on values-based pledge. • Assemble an effective ethics-safety committee. • Implement an ethics booster-shot training model. • Put into practice a valued shared-responsibility policy. • Develop a valid and sought after “ethical-courage” award.
