Welcome to AVID Family Night! Senior Year
AVID Senior Year Goals • 1st semester- apply for college • We will be spending approximately one day per week, dedicated to filling out App’s and other admission related work • 2nd semester- pay for college • We will spend our time researching and applying for financial aid along with completing the steps required for admission • ALL year- MAINTAIN GRADES!!!
AVID Senior Year at-a-Glance • College Applications (including college admission essays/personal statements) • Financial Aid Applications (FAFSA, scholarships, Dream Act, Cal Grant) • Evaluate admissions and financial aid offers • Continue development of students’ reading, writing and critical thinking skills
University of California (UC) www.universityofcalifornia.edu
UCs & ACT/SAT • Self-report scores on admissions application • Deadlines for official test scores vary by school (some as early as 11/31/14) • When ACT/College Board sends official score reports to one UC campus, all campuses apply to will receive
UC Educational Opportunity Program(EOP) • Provides admission and academic assistance to first-generation college students or students demonstrating a history of being from a low-income background • In many cases, the program offers financial assistance to eligible students • When completing admission application, check “yes” for EOP- Students must complete regular application first • Complete family information section on parent education, language spoken in home and income • Complete FAFSA or Dream Act Application • Information included in personal statement also determines placement in EOP: student should mention if first in the family to pursue a higher education
California State University (CSU) www.calstate.edu
Impaction & Eligibility Index • All CSU’s use the Eligibility index to determine who get accepted • Of the 23 CSU Campuses, 15 are impacted and require higher Eligibility Index scores (2900 is the minimum) • This higher score may be campus wide or based on major • Bakersfield, East Bay, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, Cal Maritime, and Stanislaus are NOT impacted.
CSUs & ACT/SAT • Self-report scores on admissions application • Deadlines for official test scores (from ACT/College Board) vary by campus; best to take no later than November • For SAT, can list CSUMentor as a score recipient by using code 3594 – will send scores to all CSU campuses
CSU Educational Opportunity Program(EOP) • Similar to UC Educational Opportunity Program • When completing admission application, check “yes” for EOP • Complete FAFSA or Dream Act Application • Additional application required • Application deadlines vary by campus

Information Needed for Applications • Social Security #: if applicable. Students who have received Social Security #s through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) should not use the numbers. • Family income & size: 2013 family income and 2014 estimated family income, plus the number of people in the household (parents & dependents), are required of students applying for application fee waivers and the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). • California residency information: to establish California residency, students will need to supply the month/year they and their parents arrived in California if they have ever lived outside of California. • Citizenship status information: students must enter a country of citizenship (or “none”). If country of citizenship is outside the United States, they will need to provide immigration status and visa type/date issued. • College appropriate email (CHECK this REGULARLY!!!)
PIN.GOV • This is where you sign up for a 4-digit number that is used to “sign” electric documents such as FAFSA • Each individual student needs their own personal PIN number • Parents will also need their own separate PIN number • Parents who have already completed a FAFSA or another tax document SHOULD have their own PIN number
Cost of Applying to a 4-Year University • UC Application costs $70 per campus, unless have fee waivers (Nov) • CSU Application costs $55 per campus, unless have fee waivers (Nov) • $100 Intent to Register Fee for campus attending (May 1, 2014) Not ALL CSU’s require this • $200-$500 for Student Orientation cost (May) • Up to $500 Housing Deposit (April-June) Some fees may be waived by Pell Grant eligibility or if student received fee waiver
