At the end of this lesson, students should be able to: • Define the Internet. • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of the • Internet. • List requirements needed to access the Internet. • Define the World Wide Web (WWW). • State available web browsers.
List commonly used search engines. • State the function of a search engine. • Search for information using a search engine. • Download files from the Internet. • Exercise responsibility when downloading • information from the Internet. • Exercise accountability for information • searched.
Definition of Internet • The internet or the Net is the world’s largest computer network which connects millions of computer all over the world.
Advantages of Internet 1. Data and information rich, including a range of media. 2. Anyone can publish online (tripod.com and other hosting sites) 3. Learners can become researchers because of easier access to data 4. Search engines that are fast and powerful 5. Easy to use. 6. Smaller, faster, cheaper all the time
Disadvantages of Internet 1. Information overload. 2. No librarians for quality control(with some exceptions, like Kids Click! And other sites for children). 3. Need for quality control in the data that student find and use. 4. Search engine that show result base on who pays the most. 5. Not enough training for effective use. 6. Push to upgrade constantly.

Definition of World Wide Web • The World Wide Web (commonly shortened to the Web) is a system of interlinked, hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a web browser, a user views web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigates between them using hyperlinks.
Web Browsers • A web browser is a software application that enables a user to display and interact with text, images, videos, music and other information typically located on a Web page at a website on the World Wide Web or a local area network.

Search Engines • Commonly Used Search Engines • Yahoo • Google • Function of Search Engines To help people look for information based on certain keywords.
Activity 1: Search for information using a search engine.
Click Internet Browser icon • located on the desktop. • b. Click the Address box and type: c. Press the Enter key.
d. Your browser will display the Web pages for the Google Search engine.
e. Click the blank search box and then type Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia. Press Enter key. Type here
f. Click the underlined Kementerian Pelajaran link. Click here
g. Your browser will display Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia home page.
Activity 2: Downloading file from the Internet Explorer
DownloadingImages • Open your web browser and • follow the steps for searching • information.
Right click on the images that • you want to save. Right click on the image
Click Save Images As Click here
Choose My Pictures, click Open. Step 1: Click here Step 2: Click here

Responsibility When Downloading Information From Internet • Responsibility – obligation • When you download information from the internet, you have to do the following: • cite the URL • include the date you access the website • For example: • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wide_Web • (access on 5th November 2009)
Accountability for Information Searched • Accountability – reliability of something • When you search information from the • internet, you have to do the following: • Make sure the website that you browse is reliable. • For example: • http://www.emoe.gov.my
