HW-147T Building high quality Windows PCs using the assessment and deployment kit Michael Beck Principal Group Program Manager Microsoft Corporation
Agenda • A look at a consumers view of the PC experience • New ways to measure the PC experience • Tour of the assessment tools in the ADK • Customizing assessments to meet your needs You’ll leave with examples of how to • Measure the PC Experience with the new tools provided in the ADK • Troubleshoot, tweak, and resolve issues that impact the PC experience
Customers judge the whole PC experience • Quality expectations are changing • Software + Hardware + Windows = PC experience • The way we measure PC quality must also change
System assessment in the ADK • Provides a new way to measure system quality • The ADK tools measure a PC’s quality attributes
Benchmarking doesn’t go far enough • Advantages • Accepted, and easy to discuss by techies • Used as part of certification or comparison • Widely adopted, especially in the press • Disadvantages • Provided with little context on how they’re created • A “black box” to users • Less useful in system engineering
System assessment basics • “System assessment” is a process that uses the ADK tools to measure and analyze a PC • Assessments are core functionality tests • Combinations of these tests provide additional measures of the entire PC experience
demo Windows Assessment Console Getting started with assessment tools
Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA) • XPerf in Windows 7 • Takes you down as deep as you want into analyzing a system at runtime • Used by Windows engineers to find and fix code issues

demo System assessment beyond a single machine
Windows Assessment Service (WAS) • Infrastructure to support lab environments • Automation to support large scale deployment and assessment of many machines • Results database allows for system comparison, analysis and reporting
