Mr. Mean, Ms. Median, and Mrs. Mode enjoy watching sports. One day they were having a discussion about the average points their favorite teams score. They decided they would have to do some research the best way to determine which team has the highest average score.
Pick a team Find the points earned for the last 10 games played. Make a table of the games and points. Construct a graph of the table Find the mean, median, mode, & range Create questions for the graph The Game Plan Our three characters developed the following plan:
NBA Phoenix Suns LA Clippers LA Lakers Utah Jazz Minnesota Timberwolves NHL Phoenix Coyotes Los Angeles Kings San Jose Sharks Colorado Avalance Minnesota Wild PICK A TEAM
Find the Points • Make a Table • Construct a Graph
Determine Values Find the Mean – Add all points together and divide by the number of games. 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 4 = 25 / 10 = 2.5 Find the Median – List points from least to greatest and find middle number 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4 = 3 Find Mode – Which number of points occurs most often 3 Find Range – Greatest number of points minus least number of points 4 – 1 = 3
Questions • To be fair each character created questions to ask the others about their data. Make at least 3 questions for someone else to answer about your graph. • What is the mean, median, and mode? • How do I find the mean? • What kind of graph is it?
