  9. Introduction: • ONGC is the largest E&P company in the country engaged in oil exploration and production in India and abroad. • Exploration, drilling, production and processing of oil is an energy intensive activity. • Energy for our need at present is obtained from SEB or self generation

  10. In the direction of Wind • We are setting up a 50 MW Wind power Project in Gujarat State to meet our internal demand at various oil producing installations.

  11. Why Wind Energy – Options • Solar Energy – Thermal or Electric • Wind Energy • Geothermal – Steam or Power • Ocean – Tidal, Wave, Thermal

  12. Why Wind Power for ONGC? • Gujarat has good Wind potential and has Large Number of oil installation. • ONGC buys power at more than Rs. 4 Wind power cost / KwH ~ Rs 2 • Good SEB T&D network for wheeling of power. • Availability of Land

  13. ONGC in Wind Power • Therefore ONGC decided to go for wind power to replace SEB power. • Capacity of 50 MW is as per demand • Concept of turn key project. • Includes 10 year O&M

  14. ONGC Wind Power - Features • Project to include Land, equipments & O&M charges. • Size, Type of Technology etc. left to bidder to decide. • Site within state to be as per bidder. • Pre-bid discussions to understand their requirement.

  15. Project Details • Selection of EPC contractor through open competitive bidding. • Evaluation based on cost of generation (Rs./KwH) • Evaluation included O&M Costs for 10 years. • Minimum O&M Charges pre-defined.

  16. ONGC in Wind Power – Project details • Machines – 34 Numbers of 1.5 MW • Tower – 78 Meters high steel towers • Site – Near Bhuj in Gujarat • Wheeling – To ONGC installations.

  17. F.R. - Features • PLF – About 24% • Wind Speed – 8-10 meters per second • Technology – Latest • Machine Size – Choice of bidder. • Financial – All benefits considered. • Use – In house for ONGC

  18. Status The work has been Completed and 10 out of 34 machines producing power which is being wheeled. Rest are awaiting grid connection.

  19. Issues Discussed & Addressed • Minimum Generation Guarantee • O&M of complete power plant • Insurance Policies • Coordination with State electricity board • Other Concerns

  21. Concerns • Normal Variation in Generation • Breakdown affecting Generation • Less Generation due to less Wind • Surplus Generation due to good wind (No banking beyond one month in Gujarat state)

  22. Concerns • Availability and Reliability of Grid • Grid Failure • Wheeling and banking agreements • Social Concerns / Myths • Coordination with multiple agencies.

  23. Conclusion Wind energy is one of the best, economical, technology tested, environment friendly clean source of energy, best alternate option for medium term requirements.
