His Family • His parents were James and Eliza (Riddle) Woodson • His grandparents, father, and mother were all slaves • His mother secretly learned how to read while she was a slave and taught her children how to read as well
Woodson’s Accomplishments • He was known as the father of Black History Month • Graduated with honors from Berea College in 1903 • He earned an undergraduate degree and his M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1907 • He founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. (A.S.A.L.H) • He completed his Ph.D from Harvard in 1912.
