Purpose tonight • Give a brief overview of FCAT Testing • Provide parents with practical, everyday things to do that will strengthen your child’s reading, math, science, and writing skills.
What tests are taken at each grade? Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 Reading and Math – April 15-19 Reading and Math – April 15-19 Writing - Feb. 26 Given on designated dates under standardized conditions Reading and Science – April 15-19 Math – April 22-24 ALL TESTS
How is the FCAT Scored? Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Below grade level expectations Below grade level expectations (Minimum passing score for 3rd grade Reading for promotion) Above Grade Level Expectations On Grade Level Level 4 & 5 Scoring Scale for 2011-12 is changing – it will be more difficult to score a 3, 4, or 5 5th Grade Reading & Math FCAT Scores are used by the middle schools for placement in Lang. Arts & Math courses.
FCAT Reading VOCABULARY (20%) LITERARY ANAYLSIS (30%) READING APPLICATION (30%) Context Clues, Base Words, Antonyms, Synonyms, Multiple Meanings Character, Plot, Problem, Solution, Setting, Simile, Metaphor INFORMATIONAL TEXT (20%) Author’s Purpose, Main Idea, Contrast, Compare, Cause & Effect, Sequence Locate, interpret, organize information, text features 50-55 Items – Test Time 140 min. in 2 sessions
READING – outside of school • Read 20-30 minutes at a time, 5-7 times per week • Variety of reading materials of interest • Be a reading model and partner • Do activities together that require reading • Talk about things your child has read • Read to older or younger siblings • Technology options
FCAT Math OPERATIONS, PROBLEMS & STATISTICS (50%) FRACTIONS (20%) Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Estimation, Tables, Charts, Graphs Fractions, Mixed numbers, Comparing & ordering fractions GEOMETRY AND MEASUREMENT (30%) Polygons, Reflections, Symmetry, Perimeter, Measurement (standard & metric), Time, Elapsed time Approximately 55 items – most Multiple Choice 4th & 5th grades add Gridded Response 140 minutes – 2 sessions
MATH –outside of school • Do an activity together that uses math • Building, constructing, crafts, sewing • Cooking • Sports • Grocery Shopping • All Math Facts (+, -, x, /) should be mastered • Technology Options
FCAT Science – 5th Grade Only PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL EARTH & SPACE LIFE & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIFIC THINKING 60-66 Items
SCIENCE – outside of school • Talk about Science concepts being learned at school • Help your child review for tests • Encourage check-out of nonfiction, science-based library books • Talk about science as it relates to nature, cooking, weather, animals • Use Science words • Observation • Prediction • hypothesis
FCAT WRITING – 4th Grade Only • EXPOSITORY – explain or describe • NARRATIVE – tell a story • CONVENTIONS • Capitalization • Punctuation • Spelling • Sentence Structure • Organization • Sequence of events
WRITING • Emphasize correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and organization of thoughts in: • Journals • Story Writing • Travel log of a trip • Write a new ending to a story • Write or type emails or stories • Generating grocery or “to do” lists – organization and sequencing
Learning – beyond the classroom Doesn’t have to take a lot of time. Happens over time, often in small segments, with repetition. Is best when it is connected and with purpose. Thank you for coming tonight!
